Chapter 1406:
By then, their coworkers had finished their afternoon break and were back at their desks, buried in work.
Linsey was about to settle at her station when Yana approached. “Linsey…”
Turning at the sound of her voice, Linsey offered a warm, modest smile. Despite their similar roles, she stayed humble, always keeping a low profile.
She greeted her courteously, “Yana.”
Yana accepted the gesture without a second thought. After all, in both age and experience, she viewed herself as above Linsey. Masking her condescension, Yana put on a friendly smile and asked, “Did Mr. Wade drink the iced latte?”
Linsey faltered, unsure how to explain the earlier office fiasco, so she opted for a lie. “When I went to the office, Mr. Wade wasn’t there. I just left the latte on his desk with a note. I don’t know if he drank it.”
Quickly pivoting, she added, “Sorry, Yana, I’ve got some tasks to wrap up. Can we talk later?”
Just then, another voice broke in. “Yana…”
Yana glanced over and saw her sidekick, so she stepped toward her. “What’s up?”
The sidekick shot a quick look at Linsey, who was now focused on her work, then tugged Yana aside to murmur something. “I was just reporting to Mr. Wade, and I noticed that half of the iced latte on his desk was already gone.”
“Are you serious?” Yana gasped. “Isn’t Mr. Wade allergic to cream?”
Her sidekick nodded vigorously. “I’m telling you, I saw it myself.”
“Who would have thought that vixen could be so persuasive…” Yana’s brows furrowed, her expression tightening.
At that moment, her phone buzzed.
“Is this Yana Gates?” a man’s voice asked.
“Who is this?”
“Hello, I’m the assistant to the president of Green Group,” the caller said, cutting to the chase. “Our president would like to arrange a meeting with you, if you’re available.”
Yana’s gut reaction was skepticism—this had to be a scam. Green Group was a global powerhouse, always neck and neck with CR Corporation. She was just an ordinary employee. Why would their president know her, let alone want to meet?
Still wary, Yana snapped, “Scammer, get lost!”
She spat the words and hung up abruptly.
Her sidekick raised an eyebrow. “Yana, what was that about?”
“Nothing, just some con artist,” Yana huffed, still irritated.
Scammers were getting bolder, impersonating major corporations without fear of repercussions.
Shaking it off, Yana pulled herself together and headed back to her desk.
The day slipped by in a blur, and before long, it was nearly time to clock out. From six to eight p.m., rush hour traffic clogged the streets, so Yana typically left early to beat the gridlock.
