Her name on his lips stopped her cold, her gaze snapping to his sharp, sculpted features.
“I only promised to answer one question,” he reminded her, his tone surprisingly gentle.
“That’s not true—you answered two! When I asked if you were serious, you confirmed it,” Linsey corrected.
Collin raised an eyebrow. “So?”
“So…” Linsey’s bright eyes flickered with determination as she mustered her nerve. “What’s the harm in answering a few more questions?”
Her bold tone drew a low chuckle from Collin, as if she had just said something amusingly cheeky. “Always pushing for more, aren’t you?”
Caught out so directly, Linsey’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment. Still, this chance was too precious to let slip, and she was determined to press forward.
But before she could speak again, Collin’s phone buzzed at the worst possible moment.
“What is it?” He answered, his face reverting to its usual stoic mask, all traces of warmth vanishing.
Whatever was said on the other end caused Collin’s expression to darken instantly.
“I’ll be there immediately. Keep watch over Kylee.” Collin ended the call and left without a moment’s hesitation.
The urgency must have been dire, as he didn’t spare Linsey a glance or a single word before disappearing.
Linsey stood frozen, slow to process, and by the time she snapped out of it, Collin was long gone.
Though fleeting, their exchange had inexplicably eased the weight of her earlier melancholy.
As she made her way back to work, she quietly sifted through her thoughts.
Suddenly, a familiar voice rang out nearby. “Linsey!”
She looked up, her face brightening instantly. “Lara!”
The two rushed toward each other, Lara’s expression alight with excitement. “I heard you joined CR Corporation—congratulations!”
Lara had been a colleague at Linsey’s former company, where they had always clicked.
Capable and sharp, Lara had resigned decisively after being denied a raise, and their contact had gradually faded.
Linsey hadn’t imagined Lara would also be at CR Corporation, and the surprise widened her eyes.
They quickly found a cozy corner in the lounge to catch up, erupting into laughter the moment they sat down. Reuniting at the same company felt like striking gold.
Mid-conversation, a thought struck Linsey. “Lara, do you know anything about CR Corporation’s founder?”
