I am The Dominant Alpha - Chapter 145

Chapter 145:

“Do you smell that?” Ash asked, his voice a low murmur as he sniffed the air, his gaze narrowing.

I took a deep breath, catching the faintest trace of something unfamiliar—an earthy, musky scent that didn’t belong in our territory. It was subtle, almost as if someone or something had deliberately tried to mask their presence, but it was there, lingering on the wind.

“Yeah,” I replied, my voice tense.

“It’s faint, but it’s there. Keep your guard up.”

We moved cautiously, following the scent as it wove through the trees, leading us deeper into the forest. The tracks were barely visible, just a few scattered paw prints in the snow, but they were enough to guide us forward, enough to confirm that we weren’t alone.

Suddenly, the scent vanished, as if it had been erased from the air, leaving us standing in the quiet, empty forest. Ash and Reed exchanged uneasy glances, their breaths visible in the cold night air.

“Do you think they knew we were following them?” Reed asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“Maybe,” I replied, scanning the trees, my senses on high alert.

“Or maybe they’re testing us, seeing how far we’re willing to follow.”

Ash’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of unease crossing his face.

“But… why? Why not just attack if they’re planning something?”

“Because whoever this is, they’re not interested in a fight. Not yet, anyway,” I said, feeling a chill settle over me.

“They’re watching us, trying to understand us. And that means they’re planning something bigger.”

We returned to the compound without incident, but the unease lingered, the weight of an unseen threat pressing down on us. Elara was waiting for us when we arrived, her expression tense as she listened to our report, her gaze distant as if she was piecing together a puzzle we couldn’t yet see.

“Whoever they are, they’re careful, deliberate,” she murmured, her voice laced with quiet determination.

“This isn’t a random threat. They know exactly what they’re doing.”

I nodded, sensing the same dark intelligence behind the movements, the deliberate nature of each track, each faint scent left in the snow. This was no rogue band of wolves, no scattered remnants of Silas’s forces. This was something else, something calculated, and it sent a shiver through me.

“We’ll increase the patrols, keep an eye on the borders,” I said, my voice steady despite the tension coiling in my chest.

“If they’re watching us, we’ll make sure they know we’re watching them too.”

Elara’s gaze softened as she looked at me, a faint smile touching her lips.

“Thank you, Dante. For being here, for helping me through this. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

I returned her smile, feeling a warmth that eased the chill in my bones.

“We’re in this together, Elara. Whatever comes, we’ll face it as one.”

As the days passed, the pack remained on high alert, each wolf vigilant, their senses sharp as they patrolled the borders, watching for any sign of the unseen threat that lingered beyond the trees. But as winter deepened, the signs began to fade, the scents disappearing, the tracks vanishing into the snow, leaving us with only the memory of their presence.

But I knew, deep down, that this wasn’t over. Whoever had been watching us hadn’t left; they were waiting, biding their time, planning their next move. And as I stood at the edge of the compound one evening, watching the snow fall softly over the trees, I felt a sense of resolve settle over me. This was our home, our family, and I would do whatever it took to protect it. Talon Pack had faced darkness before, had endured threats from within and without, and we had emerged stronger every time. Whatever lay beyond the borders, whatever shadow threatened us, we would face it as we always had—together.

The night I left Talon Pack still haunted me. It was a wound that had never fully healed, the scar of a choice I wasn’t sure had even been mine to make. Betrayal had a way of warping everything, turning what was once familiar into something alien and unrecognizable. Leaving had felt like both the ultimate act of selfishness and a necessary sacrifice to protect the pack I had once called family. Even now, I couldn’t decide if it was ambition or loyalty that had driven me away. For weeks, I’d battled the tension within the pack—the constant push and pull between my vision for its future and the council’s devotion to tradition. The elders saw my instincts, my drive to lead, as dangerous. I told myself I wanted to protect Talon Pack, to guide it toward a better future, but there were moments—quiet, biting moments—when I wondered if it was my pride whispering those promises, not my heart.
