Kylee blinked, caught off guard, and sniffled, saying, “I… I don’t know…”
Lowering his eyes, Lyle let out a quiet scoff.
“Today, I heard something from Grandpa. He said Carola had blood drawn from you and herself for a DNA test. That news genuinely surprised me. Kylee, what’s your opinion on this?”
The moment he brought the matter up, Kylee’s chest tightened with dread.

She stared at Lyle in disbelief and blurted out, “Impossible! If I’m not my mother’s daughter, then whose child could I possibly be?” Her composure began to crack, giving way to growing anxiety and unease.
