Chapter 1868:
Lyle remained silent, his gaze steady on Belinda, as if searching her face for something.
After a long silence, Galen suddenly asked, “Are your parents treating you well?”
The question sparked a fleeting glint in Belinda’s eyes.
Belinda slowly lifted her gaze to Galen.
With the relationship between their families, he had no business asking a question like that. Unless… he already knew something.
Or perhaps he was simply suspecting something.
With that thought, Belinda’s feelings grew complicated. After a long silence, she finally parted her lips and answered calmly, “They aren’t good to me.”
Galen’s heart clenched at her words. He drew in a sharp breath, then said, “Carola told me that the reason you were so overweight back then, and the birthmark on your face… it wasn’t natural? The ones who did that to you were your parents?”
“Yes,” Belinda answered with a firm nod.
“They are monsters!” Galen burst out, fury darkening his face. He ground his teeth together.
“To commit something so vile… they don’t even deserve to be called human!”
Then, his anger softened into sorrow as his gaze rested on Belinda.
“You must have suffered greatly. You went through hell when you were little, didn’t you?”
But Belinda only gave a faint shake of her head.
“Not really.” She paused, then added quietly, “Back then, Holley treated me decently. And my grandmother, she was even kinder. So truly, I didn’t suffer much as a child.”
She was telling the truth.
Maybe that was why she had never once doubted Holley was her real mother.
Even later, when she discovered that her weight had been caused by hormone injections from childhood, and when the birthmark on her face suddenly disappeared, she had still never questioned Holley.
Looking back now, perhaps that had been Holley’s most clever deception.

If she had abused Belinda outright, then combined with the hormone injections, Belinda would have grown suspicious long ago.
But Galen didn’t buy Belinda’s words. How could anyone cruel enough to inject a child and disfigure her face possibly treat the child well?
The very thought made his chest ache for Belinda all the more. And when it dawned on him that Belinda might truly be his granddaughter, his fury toward Holley and Baker flared hot enough to kill. Those monsters!
They were definitely going to hell!
Galen’s breath came heavy, trembling with fury. Belinda regarded him calmly before asking, “Mr. Happer, why did you come to see me today? Just to ask these questions?”
Galen gave a nod.
“Yes. I just… I only wanted to check on you. To understand a little more about your life.”
“Why?” Belinda pressed, her eyes sharp with suspicion.
