Once the crimson vial found its secure place within his case, Rodney straightened and addressed Carola with professional courtesy, saying, “Mrs. Wright, I shall depart now.”
Carola gave a nod of acknowledgment.
“Very well. I appreciate your assistance in this matter.”
“I am just doing my job.” Rodney smiled cordially and left with his medical equipment.
The instant the doctor’s footsteps faded from earshot, Kylee launched herself from the sofa and fled toward the staircase, her renewed sobs creating a haunting soundtrack to her retreat.
Baker watched her ascent with growing dismay, then released a profound sigh.
“Carola… you have hurt her deeply by doing this. How could you inflict this cruelty upon her?” Without pausing for a response, he turned sharply and marched upstairs, his footsteps heavy with condemnation.
Carola’s expression remained unchanged throughout the entire exchange, her features fixed in an emotionless mask.

“There’s nothing I can do at this point. It all happened too fast. I’m clearly being watched. If I make even the slightest move, someone’s going to catch wind of it. And that testing center? There’s no doubt they’ve got eyes on it, too. Under these circumstances, we can’t tamper with the test.”
“Then what are we supposed to do? Just sit back and wait for the truth to be exposed?” Kylee said, on the verge of tears.
