“I know what you’re trying to say,” Lucas interjected, his voice low. “You’re saying Faye might have seen you standing at the edge of that hill and acted on impulse, pushing you. That’s why no matter how deep I dig, I won’t uncover anything suspicious about her.”
“Yes,” Belinda replied.
Lucas fell silent, lost in thought. Belinda knew he was deeply troubled by this, so she chose to remain quiet as well.
Minutes slipped by before Lucas composed himself. The tension in his shoulders eased, his expression softening as he turned to her with a faint smile. “Let’s go out for dinner tonight. Just the two of us.”
Belinda studied him for a second, then returned the smile with a nod. “Alright.”
After tossing around a few restaurant options, they settled on The Rooftop. Upon arriving at The Rooftop’s parking lot, they got out of the car just as the door of the car parked opposite them opened.
When Belinda spotted the figure emerging from the passenger seat, her mouth curved into a smile.
“Mrs. Wright.”
Carola stepped forward, with Kylee trailing close behind.
“What a delightful surprise—you’re dining here tonight as well.” Carola beamed as she approached Belinda.
“Indeed. Did you manage to complete your intravenous treatment at the hospital today?” Belinda inquired with genuine concern.
“All finished for the day,” Carola replied.
“Wonderful. You seem to be in good spirits. Another day of hospital treatment tomorrow, and you should be fully recovered.”
Belinda fell into step beside Carola as they made their way toward the elevator. Lucas positioned himself alongside Belinda, while Kylee lingered several paces behind Carola.

When Kylee noticed the animated conversation between Carola and Belinda, her expression soured. Her eyes drifted from the chattering women to Lucas. Despite the fear and resentment she felt toward him, she couldn’t help but be drawn to him. She still had feelings for him.
The elevator doors slid open, and Carola suddenly realized she had unconsciously left Kylee behind. She extended her arm, clasping Kylee’s fingers with her hand and drawing her to her side.
This protective gesture sent a surge of joy through Kylee’s chest, making her smirk. So what if Belinda shared such an easy rapport with Carola? So what if Belinda was Carola’s biological daughter? As long as Carola continued to think she was her daughter, that was enough.
Once they reached the restaurant, they parted ways.
