Tamara noticed, casting her a sidelong glance. She said nothing, her fingers moving in quiet composure as she answered the call and tapped on speaker. “Hello,” she said, voice steady.
“Mrs. Wright,” Dr. Brooks began solemnly, his voice low and heavy with remorse, “please accept my deepest apologies. The failure of the hypnosis session rests entirely on my shoulders.”
He drew a steadying breath, then added with measured gravity, “Afterward, I confronted my assistant. It took some pressing, but she eventually broke down and confessed—someone had paid her to sabotage the entire procedure.”
Tamara’s expression shifted in an instant. “What?” She exchanged a glance with Nalani. “Who would do such a thing?” she asked.
“According to my assistant, the contact was made via a phone call. The voice on the other end was disguised—distorted enough that she couldn’t tell if it belonged to a man or a woman. The caller offered her half a million dollars to ensure the hypnosis session failed.”
He paused, then continued with a grim shake of his head. “She was wired twenty thousand dollars upfront that very day, with the promise of the remaining thirty once the sabotage was complete. And so it was. The temptation was too great—she gave in. The session failed because of her.”
Dr. Brooks let out a long, weary sigh, the weight of regret settling heavily on his shoulders. “Mrs. Wright,” he said softly, “believe me, I never imagined things would…”

Tamara’s expression darkened like a storm, her fury simmering.
“You dismissed her?” she snapped, her voice rising with each syllable. “You really think firing her solves everything?”

Tamara directed all her anger at Dr. Brooks. Though resignation hung heavily over him like a shadow, he undeniably bore irrefutable responsibility for the matter.
He exhaled slowly. “Mrs. Wright, I’m truly sorry for what happened. If you need someone to blame, direct it toward my assistant. I won’t shield her. I can provide her address and contact details if you wish.”
There was no hesitation in his offer; he made his assistant the target of Tamara’s wrath without remorse. After all, she had betrayed him. He wasn’t about to shoulder all the responsibility.
Tamara was momentarily speechless at Dr. Brooks’ words. She then took a deep breath and said, “Send the information to me.” Without waiting for a reply, she ended the call.
