Margie went to answer the door. When she saw the woman standing there, she frowned.
“Let me in,” Holley said, trying to push past her.
Margie raised a hand to stop her. “I’m sorry, but I can’t let you in.”
Holley bit her lip and took a breath. “Then please tell Belinda and my mother that I have something important to talk to them about.”
Margie hesitated briefly, then nodded. “Alright. You can wait here. I’ll go tell them that.”
With that, she closed the door right in Holley’s face. Holley’s cheeks flushed with indignation. How dare Margie, who was just a maid, treat her that way?
Once she got back into Belinda’s good graces, the very first thing she’d do would be to send Margie packing.
Five minutes passed before the door opened again.
Margie said to Holley flatly, “You may come in now.”
Holley swallowed her frustration and entered the house.
In the living room, she found Belinda and Gwenda seated on the couch.
“Mom, Belinda…” she began, her voice tentative.
Belinda looked at her, her expression calm yet clearly guarded. “If there’s something you need to say, go ahead and say it now.”
Holley skipped the niceties and got straight to the point. “Did Sarai reach out to you?”
A flicker of something—surprise, maybe—crossed Belinda’s face. Her suspicions had been right. This was about Sarai.
“And what if she did?” Belinda replied coolly, deflecting without offering an answer.
Holley quickly said, “Whatever she told you, do not believe a single word. She is lying, manipulating you like she always has. Sarai knew about the hormone injections I gave you. From the very beginning, she knew. She used that information to blackmail me. I panicked. I thought that if you ever found out, you would hate me. I was terrified of losing you. That is the only reason I went along with her plan and fed you that fabricated story.”

She paused to bite her lip, then inhaled slowly, steadying herself before continuing. “After she was kicked out of Owathe, she called me again. This time, she was demanding money from me. I gave in. I had no choice. But now that the truth is out, I am done giving in to her. This month, when she called again for money, I said no. I told her to do whatever she wanted. She threatened to call you and spill everything. I told her to go ahead and do it.”
Holley glanced between Belinda and Gwenda, searching their expressions for something, a sign of sympathy. Nothing.
“I am guessing she already called you. Probably apologized. Tried to come across as honest and full of regret. She definitely claimed she wanted to make things right. But do not fall for it. She is playing you. If she really felt sorry, she would not keep using that secret to blackmail me. She is not trying to make amends. She is trying to ruin me now that I cut her off.”
She stopped talking, waiting for a response.
