“They never deserved to be your parents,” Lucas said, his tone laced with a sharp edge of anger. He slid his arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer.

Kenia smiled warmly and nodded. “Alright, alright, I’ll be careful. Don’t worry.”
Then, studying Belinda’s face, she asked, “Is there something on your mind?”
Belinda pressed her lips together, her lashes lowering. “Yes, I need to talk to you about something. It’s about Holley.”
At the mention of Holley’s name, Kenia set her knitting aside.
Her face grew solemn.
“What is it?” she asked.
Belinda’s voice was soft but heavy. “Grandma, do you remember when you and Holley took me to the county hospital for a checkup when I was a kid?”
