Chapter 59:
“Do you have any sense of responsibility as a husband? Show your utmost care when she’s pregnant.” Kennedy had a dark expression from his series of questions. She clenched her hands tightly on the panel.
Nathan pulled the depressed feeling out of him. He responded before Kennedy lost his temper, “I’m sorry, doctor. Mr. Kennedy hurt her legs. We brought her in as soon as we discovered the problem. How is she now?”
The doctor felt much better after releasing his anger, but he looked up at Kennedy with an unpleasant expression, “She’s out of danger now. But she still needs to stay a couple of days for observation.”
“Are you saying that… your baby is safe too?” asked Nathan cautiously.
“How can you talk like that?” the doctor questioned angrily, “Don’t you love the baby?”
“Of course I don’t! It’s good that the baby is safe and sound.” Nathan was very apologetic. He was not good with words.
The doctor pulled his hand away and left. Nathan turned to Kennedy grumpily, “If that bastard was gone, you wouldn’t have to worry about him.”
Kennedy cocked his eyebrows and questioned in a fierce voice, “Are you serious?” His words were met by a dismayed silence.
Nathan was very surprised. It was Kennedy who had called the baby a ‘bastard’, and besides, he wanted to get rid of him. How could he…?
Anyway, he had to get used to it. Kennedy had changed a lot after his marriage to Charlotte.
Nathan freed his mind at the thought.
The smell of disinfectant filled the room in silence. Charlotte was dressed in a clean uniform. She was lying quietly in the hospital bed, her face pale and weak, as if she had been seriously ill. Kennedy was sitting in his wheelchair near the bed, and his soft eyes were fixed on her.
“When will she wake up?” He asked sharply.
“I checked with the doctor. She should be awake tonight.” Kennedy looked away, “Let’s go back now.”
Nathan was startled by her words, “Aren’t we going to wait here?”
“Ask Nanny Chan to come.”
Nathan quickly caught on and nodded, “I’ll ask her to prepare some food as well. Miss Wilson can take them when she wakes up.”
The hospital was silent for the night. The patients had fallen asleep with the company of their relatives. Charlotte slowly woke up with her eyes rolling, next to a kind woman.
“You’re awake, miss.”
Hearing the title, Charlotte quickly recovered from her dead mind. Nanny Chan was Kennedy’s maid. Charlotte did not straighten up as a wave of pain hit her abdomen, and she lay down again.
Nanny Chan immediately got up, “Don’t get up now, miss. You are still weak and lie down for a while. are you thirsty? Let me get you some water.”
She kindly passed her the water before Charlotte responded. She accepted with a wry smile. Then Nanny Chan lifted her up with a pillow on her back.
“How are you feeling now?”
She asked worriedly as Charlotte gulped the water. “Do you need to call a doctor?”
Charlotte shook her head and replied quietly, “Thank you. I’m fine. No need for the doctor to come.”
It was just a small pain in her abdomen. Unconsciously, she reached out and rubbed it gently.
“I’ve prepared a light supper for you. Try some, ma’am.”
Nanny Chan took the food out of its insulated box.
Charlotte hadn’t eaten anything today, and she was famished at the moment.
“Here you are, miss.” Nanny Chan handed her the congee. Charlotte became very excited, “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Hurry up and eat it while it’s hot.”
Kennedy appeared behind the window, and saw that Charlotte was chatting with Nanny Chan. Then Nathan approached in bewilderment, “What can I do for you, Mr. Kennedy?”
“Let’s get out of here.” ordered Kennedy in a somber voice.
Nathan was even more confused, “But we just got here and…. Charlotte was awake. We should go in and check it out.”
“Do you understand what I’m saying?” Kennedy stifled his anger with crooked eyebrows.
“Really? I thought we’d come to visit Miss Wilson.” Nathan was at a loss for words. It was a perfect time to come in, but why did he want to leave now?
Nathan didn’t quite understand what exactly Kennedy was thinking, but after stating his thoughts, Kennedy’s body aura suddenly lowered. He realized something was wrong, “Okay then.”
By the time she headed for the outside, Nanny Chan opened the door, “Here you go, Mr. Kennedy.”
Charlotte clearly heard what he said.
She was frightened by his presence. She almost forgot that Kennedy was the one who had sent her to the hospital.
“Are you coming in, Mr. Kennedy? The young lady is awake.” Kennedy was silent.
Charlotte left with a bowl in her hand. Kennedy did not go in. Maybe he didn’t want to see her. Charlotte slowed down and looked toward the door.
At the same time, Kennedy answered in an icy voice.
“No.”
Charlotte was overcome with a sense of loss and lowered her eyes.
“Let’s get out of here!”
Nathan carried her away, while Nanny Chan remained bewildered. She was lost. Mr. Kennedy was supposed to visit the lady without a doubt. Why didn’t he come in? Charlotte must have known of his presence, too, but she went directly after his greeting.
Were they arguing, Nanny Chan thought to herself. Then she returned with a bottle of water in her hand.
“Did you and Mr. Kennedy…?”
“Has he gone yet?” Charlotte interrupted her.
Nanny Chan was distressed to see Charlotte’s displeased face. She tried to offer a few words of comfort, “He left in a hurry. Something must have happened. I’m sure she’s worried about you.”
Charlotte smiled bitterly. Really? She might be kidding herself .
