Her brother would be very sad if she refused outright.
So, Charlotte said nothing. It was a sign of agreement.
Zain didn’t stay long. He left after he saw her eating the porridge. Before he left, he told her, “I have brought guards to protect you. They are around here. Don’t open the door if you don’t know who’s behind it. Don’t do it again.”
Charlotte didn’t think twice when she did that because she couldn’t think straight. Fortunately, it was Zain who was on the other side of the door. She could be dead tonight if it was someone who didn’t mean well.
So, instead of answering him, she nodded and said, “I won’t do it again.”
When Zain left, Charlotte closed the door and went back to her bed. She found her phone recharging. And there was a laptop on her nightstand.
The laptop didn’t look new. When she picked it up, a piece of paper fell out. The password was written on it. She entered the password as if she was being monitored to do so. Surprisingly she found some files that were not neatly arranged on the desktop.
Maybe… Was it Zain’s laptop?
How could he just give it to me, isn’t he afraid he might know her trade secrets?’
Or, was she giving all her attention to her newfound sister, so she could hardly concentrate on other things?
These thoughts upset her. She turned off the laptop and put it aside.
She turned on her phone when it was fully recharged.
The phone kept reminding her that she had missed calls and messages from Yanis after she turned it on. She could tell Yanis was worried about her, so she called her.
Suddenly, she realized it was in the middle of the night. Yanis probably wouldn’t answer the call.
Charlotte realized when she wanted to hang up.
“Hello? Charlotte?” Yanis’ voice indicated his concern.
Charlotte suddenly felt like crying. She nodded and said, “Yes, it’s me.”
“Is it really you, are you okay? Charlotte… Do you know we’re worried about you?
I just answered a call and you weren’t in. How are you now, where are you?”
“Don’t worry.” Charlotte explained, “I’m in a hotel now and I’m fine. I just…wanted to be alone for a while, so I left. I’m sorry I worried you.”
Yanis sighed, “Of course I knew you wanted to be alone. But I’d be scared too if what happened to you happened to me. How could you not call me until now? Thank God, you finally called me. I could have stayed up all night if you hadn’t told me you were okay.”
“Now that I tell you I’m safe, you can rest now. It’s quite late.”
“No! Send me your location. I can’t sleep without knowing where you are.”
Charlotte felt her heart grow warm. She agreed, “I’ll send it to you after I get off the phone.”
“Good! Hang up now and send me your location.”
Before Charlotte knew it, Yanis hung up the phone. Charlotte then connected to her Wechat and sent Yanis her location.
Yanis’ concern dissipated after receiving the location.
And Yanis also told Charlotte to be careful. Otherwise, she would go to the hotel room. Their conversation then ended.
It had been a hard day. Charlotte was tired. And since she was getting sleepy easily lately, she couldn’t keep her eyes open now. She fell asleep after hanging up the phone.
However, what she dreamed was not pleasant. Even… it was so cruel that she just wanted to wake up.
“From now on, we are just strangers. You are no longer the second daughter-in-law of the Moore Family.”
“Go away. I, Kennedy Moore, would not marry a woman who has been divorced.”
“I got pregnant with Kennedy’s baby. But your baby is a bastard. You, Charlotte, are no better than me.”
Charlotte finally woke up after a long night’s nightmare. Sunlight was streaming through the window and the room was bright. She wiped the sweat from her forehead. She realized that she had sweated a lot.
He got up and went to the bathroom to wash.
After the shower, he heard the doorbell ring. He checked the time and saw that it was half past seven. At first he wanted to open the door directly. But then he thought about what Zain had told him last night. So she looked through the peephole and found a woman with a benevolent face.
Charlotte opened the door after thinking for a while.
“Madam, what can I do for you?”
“Good morning, miss.” The woman smiled and showed the bag she was holding, saying, “I’ve come to bring you breakfast by order of Mr. Nelson.”
It was certain that every meal would be prepared. It was out of Charlotte’s expectation that Zain had arranged this. But… it was already the middle of the night when she arrived at the hotel. Zain was still preparing these things well.
Wasn’t he going to sleep late into the night?
Realizing this, Charlotte stepped back and said, “Thank you. Please come in.”
The woman entered but did not scan the room with her eyes. Then, she opened the bag and took out the boxes of food, saying, “This is the first time I’ve prepared a meal for you, so I’m not sure what you like. You can tell me what you like and I will prepare it for you.”
“Thank you. That’s very kind of you.”
“It’s my pleasure. You can call me Lanna.”
“Thank you, Lanna. I’m not a fan of sweet food, but I’m not picky about the rest of the food.”
Lanna nodded and smiled, saying, “I understand. Did you just wake up? Have you washed up yet?”
“Yes, I have.”
“Good. I’ll leave breakfast on the table. Is there anything I can buy for you?”
“Thank you, Lanna. I don’t have anything I need right now.”
“Well, I’ll be off then.”
“Thanks again.”
As Lanna walked out the door, Charlotte suddenly stopped her because something occurred to her. Very confused, Lanna asked, “What’s wrong?”
Charlotte walked over to the bed and picked up the laptop on the nightstand. She put it in a briefcase and handed it to Lanna, explaining, “It’s the laptop that Mr. Nelson left here last night. Could you return it to him, please?”
Hearing what he said, Lanna smiled and said, “Excuse me, miss. I cannot do you this favor. Mr. Nelson’s laptop is very valuable. And I am careless. I’m afraid of breaking it.”
Charlotte knew Lanna was declining. She realized that she herself was being inconsiderate. The laptop might have trade secrets if it was Zain’s office laptop. She shouldn’t give it to someone else so easily.
