Chapter 244:
Did he… did he know she was pregnant?
Did he suspect the child was related to him? Or would it remind him of that rainy night?
Seeing her face go pale in an instant, Manfred frowned slightly and lowered his voice, “You don’t know?”
Charlotte shook her head and stepped back unconsciously.
Manfred’s outstretched hand paused in mid-air. After a moment, she pursed her lips, “It’s Kennedy’s?”
Without waiting for her reply, Manfred said again, “No, Kennedy is sitting in a wheelchair, I couldn’t do it. Well……” His eyes rested sharply on her face.
“No one’s!” replied Charlotte loudly before he could speak.
Manfred was puzzled, “Charlotte?”
Charlotte huddled in a corner and hugged her knees. “It has nothing to do with you,” she said, looking at Manfred with wary eyes.
Her eyes went alert as if to ward off a thief, which chilled Manfred’s heart. He frowned at her and said, “Do you hate me?”
Hearing that, Charlotte’s heart had an impulse. Before she could react, Manfred reached over to hold her wrist tightly, “Why, what have I done to hurt you? Why do you hate me? I’ve been kind to you since you married into the family, even…”.
Charlotte wanted to pull her hand away, but Manfred had a lot of strength even if he was kind at the usual times. He held her wrist tightly and she couldn’t break free. She said angrily, “Even what? Manfred, let go of my hand.”
“I even gave you my heart.” Manfred looked at her with a pained expression, “But you go against me, you hate me. Charlotte, what have I done wrong?”
Charlotte felt guilty at his pained look. Yes, since she had married into the family, he had helped her, even her being humiliated by her mother in the street, as well as in things to do with Aldrich.
But……her relationship with him was too complicated, and she didn’t want to admit it.
Thinking about this, Charlotte lowered her gaze and bit her lower lip hard. “Let go of me.”
Manfred gripped her hand tightly and there was no tendency to loosen it.
“Manfred!” Charlotte huffed and her face paled. And she rebuked him.
At the sound of his name in her mouth, she loosened her grip a little. After a moment, he released her with a smirk, “If you’re willing to say my name often, then I won’t.”
Charlotte, “……”
Being silent for a long time, Charlotte willed herself to get out of bed from around the corner.
“I’ve been gone a long time. I have to get back.”
“You’re coming back after tonight?”
Charlotte raised her head in astonishment – had it been one night?
“When I brought you to my private home, you had a fever and I had no choice but to take you to the hospital. The doctor said you had a cold and the fever was keeping you in a coma, so you could only stay here for one night.”
At the thought of having spent the night away, Charlotte’s face paled instantly. She wondered what Kennedy would think of her. She wanted to reach for her phone, but for a long time she couldn’t find it.
“Looking for this?” Manfred handed her the cell phone. Charlotte quickly took it and subconsciously wanted to call Kennedy.
“If you want to find Kennedy, I can tell you frankly that he didn’t call you once last night.”
Charlotte froze and looked incredulously at Manfred.
“Disappointed? Or in pain? You didn’t come home all night and he didn’t call.”
Charlotte, “……”
She lowered her head and looked at her phone. Sure enough, the phone was silent and there was no phone.
Manfred walked over to her and said quietly, “Your marriage is a trade-off, but…. Have you had any feelings with him in this marriage?”
“No!” Charlotte suddenly raised her head and denied.
She had no feelings for him. Kennedy didn’t care for her; if he had a feeling, it would be a joke.
“Who would believe you if you denied it so quickly and so vehemently?” Manfred smiled bitterly , “You have feelings for Kennedy.”
He said firmly, not giving Charlotte a chance to deny it.
“But it hasn’t occurred to you that between you … there’s no way.” Manfred gripped her shoulder, looking at her seriously, “You can never be with him!”
“Let me go!” whispered Charlotte.
Manfred wouldn’t let go and Charlotte shouted directly at him in a loud voice, “I said let me go!”.
Manfred gently let go of her hand. Charlotte jumped straight off the bed with her phone.
But due to the after-effects of the fever, she felt dizzy and fell forward.
Bang!
Charlotte fell straight to the floor. Manfred’s face changed and he rushed to her aid, “Charlotte, are you all right?”
“Let go of me.” Charlotte forcefully pushed his hand away, “I don’t need you to mind my business. You’re just my big brother. Even if Kennedy doesn’t like me, it has nothing to do with you!”
With that, Charlotte tried to push Manfred away forcefully.
Manfred was pushed back by her. His back hit the cold wall. He looked at Charlotte with a pained look on his face.
Charlotte with a pained face, “But I don’t want to be your brother-in-law.”
Charlotte didn’t want to talk to him anymore. Instead, she turned around and prepared to leave. Although her steps faltered, she continued to walk out step by step.
Manfred stared at her back for a long time and finally couldn’t help catching up and sighed.
“I’ll take you home.”
“No.” Charlotte shook his hand. “It has nothing to do with you.”
“If you hate it when I talk about it, I won’t do it anymore.” Manfred lifted her hand straight up to hold it, despite her struggling and pushing. He said calmly, “You’re too weak now and should be hospitalized, but if you don’t want to, I’ll send you back now and won’t force you at all to do anything.”
The last sentence made Charlotte calm down. She raised her eyes to look at the face on Manfred’s side, suddenly not speaking again.
“Shut up.” He sighed helplessly, then held Charlotte to leave the hospital. When he reached the parking lot, he opened the door to carefully pull her in. He bent down to fasten her seat belt, then raised his eyes to look at her.
“Remember, Charlotte, I won’t make you do anything. No matter when, if you need help, I can do anything you want me to do.”
