Chapter 15:
Nathan’s words were like a punch in her gut. Charlotte could only lower her gaze in dejection.
“I know…”
Nathan only realized that his tone was too serious when he saw Charlotte’s mood change, “I know my words are harsh, but you should understand what I’m about to say, Miss Wilson. Anyway, you must never bring up the subject again, otherwise nothing I can do will save you from your problems.” After finishing his sentence, Nathan turned and left.
If Charlotte were a sensible person, she would choose not to mention this again.
Charlotte remained motionless in that corner for five more minutes before she knocked on the door.
“Come in.” Kenney’s voice oozed coldness and indifference, and there was still a hint of anger mixed inside.
Kennedy was not sitting as he usually sat behind his desk, but was contemplating the views of the city outside the French window. With the coldness of his voice in the back of her mind, Charlotte moved forward in silence.
A depressing silence hung over the room. When Kennedy sensed that the visitor had no intention of initiating a conversation, she turned in her wheelchair with a frown.
What came into view was Charlotte’s pale, sickly face.
Kennedy asked with a frown, “What are you doing here?”
Charlotte raised her head and met his deep eyes, “I’m, I’m your maid after all.” Had she completely forgotten what had happened earlier?
Hearing that, Kennedy couldn’t help but lift the corner of her lips and let out a cold laugh, “You think I have any use for a maid who can’t even make coffee?”
Charlotte bit her lips as she clenched her fists.
“I’ll try my best next time. I wonder what your palate likes, can you tell me?”
“Even if I tell you, do you think you can make one that’s exactly to my liking?” Charlotte nodded.
Kennedy formed a wry smile on her face, “Do you really think you’re capable of doing that?”
However, she still wanted to give it a try. She placed the coffee cup in her hands on her desk and said, “I’ll just give you one chance. Make one that tastes exactly like this one.”
Charlotte stared at the coffee cup momentarily before picking it up and turning to leave the room.
Kennedy moved her wheelchair to the back of her desk and picked up one of the documents on the table to study it. When ten minutes had passed, he looked toward the door.
There was no sign of it opening at any time.
The woman had not yet arrived.
Was she intimidated by this arduous task? Why did she need to spend more than ten minutes preparing a cup of coffee?
Another ten minutes passed in silence, and there was still no sign of her at the door.
Kennedy furrowed his eyebrows as he pondered what this woman was really doing. Was she challenging his patience? How could she take the coffee cup from him and disappear without a trace?
With a loud bang on the desk, Kennedy furiously placed his papers back on the desk. He was about to go check on her, but at the same time, he heard footsteps coming from the hallway.
Charlotte appeared with a wary look on her face as she carried a cup of coffee into the room. She was obviously trying to dodge Kennedy’s piercing gaze.
“You’ve wasted twenty minutes of my time.”
His cold voice rang out, and it was like a huge impact crashing into her.
Charlotte bit her lips and replied sheepishly, “But you didn’t mention any time limit a moment ago.”
“You!” Kennedy felt her words catch in her throat. Her fury made him suddenly let out a laugh, “Are you trying to reason with me?”
Charlotte deduced that she was no match for him in a shouting match. She quickly put down the freshly brewed coffee and declared, “Try…”. A rich coffee aroma slowly permeated the room.
Kennedy took in that aroma and an imperceptible change came over his face. His eyes narrowed into a straight line.
“I know this cup of coffee couldn’t compare to the one you brewed, but I promise you I’ve tried my best.” Charlotte offered him the coffee when she saw that he was still pinned in place.
At first, Kennedy wanted to end this charade as quickly as possible, but when he saw her pitying expression and that expectant look in her eyes, he hesitated.
She looked like an abandoned pet at that moment.
Inexplicably, Kennedy reached out and held up the coffee cup.
He took a sip and a dangerous look appeared in his eyes.
Charlotte was able to sense the sudden change in his temperament, so she reflexively took a step back and stared at him with fear in her eyes.
“Why are you backing out?” Kennedy raised his eyebrows and looked at her with dismay,
“Are you afraid I’ll splash you with this coffee?” Charlotte could only bite her lips.
It was as if her thoughts had been seen in an instant.
Kennedy took another sip before finally handing the cup back to her. Charlotte took it carefully and eyed him warily, “Wha…how about that?”
Kennedy averted her gaze to a point in space elsewhere, and replied coldly, “You manage to come up with the acceptable by the skin of your teeth.”
Hearing that, an unexplainable joy welled up inside Charlotte. A faint smile appeared on her face, “Are you serious? Does that mean I can stay here now?” her voice was animated….
Kennedy studied her and remembered the moment she first arrived at the Moore Family home. She always had that frightened look on her face and it was obvious that she lived her life here in fear all the time. However, a smile came across her face, and made her pretty face brighten considerably. Her eyes also gradually softened as she saw this sight.
It was as if something imperceptible was slowly infiltrating the deepest corner of Kennedy’s heart. Somehow he felt annoyed by it.
He tugged at the tie hanging around his neck and snorted, “Who told you you could stay here? What are you going to do with that kid?”
Kennedy suddenly brought this subject up out of nowhere, and Charlotte paled instantly as she clenched her fists tightly.
“You don’t say anything? Then it looks like you’re going to keep having that child.”
Charlotte looked at him defiantly, “How can you be so cruel? The child is innocent.”
Kennedy couldn’t contain his laughter as he looked at her with hostility, “He’s innocent, but are you innocent too? If that child finds out that his mother is actually a scheming, calculating person, not to mention someone who likes to keep up appearances, he would regret being born into this world.”
His cruel words were like knife blades stabbing into Charlotte’s heart. Her face became colorless.
“You…”
He had gone too far!
“You’ve made a point of labeling me a scheming, hypocritical person ever since I married into the Moore Family, haven’t you?”
“You’re not quite right. There is one more thing to add.”
“What are you talking about?” Charlotte’s eyes widened.
“You’re a shameless, worthless woman, too.”
Charlotte was so enraged that she almost bit her lips to the point of making them bleed.
“Anyway, the child is really innocent. Please…please give me a chance.” Charlotte suddenly felt her head turn into a ball of lead. She couldn’t lift her head and look this man in the eye and tell him the truth. Now all she could do was beg on her knees.
She could only do everything in her power to make sure that the child she carried in her womb came out of all this unscathed.
Kennedy looked at her as if she were a dead person. She didn’t even want to move an inch of her muscles at that moment.
“After two days, if that baby is still alive, I’ll take care of it myself.”
…
In the blink of an eye, the two-day deadline ran out.
Charlotte did not go to the hospital to have an abortion, because Diana had gone to find her and advised her to convince Kennedy not to get rid of the child to the best of her ability.
In the meantime, she would seek a doctor for Charlotte to seek a type of treatment that could avoid causing direct harm to Charlotte’s body even after an abortion occurred.
Deep in Charlotte’s heart, however, she never wanted to get rid of the child.
She wanted it to stay alive and be born.
As soon as Diana learned of her intentions, she branded Charlotte as crazy.
Charlotte responded with unusual calm: “I’m not crazy. I want to give birth to him. It’s a new life born from me.”
“But that child won’t have a father even if it is born later. Have you really lost it? Besides, would the Moore Family allow you to give birth to it? The Moore Family is a distinguished family after all.”
She was right. It was indeed a complication she was facing.
Charlotte touched her belly and her eyes were grave.
“I’ll figure something out.”
