Chapter 98:
Her eyes were very similar to Herbert’s, sharp and observant.
Upon closer thought, I realized that Herbert’s stern and cold temperament likely came from his mother, but McKenna’s gaze was sharper and more calculating.
Just then, I felt the intense gaze of Winter. Her eyes were like daggers—sharp and aggressive—which made me uneasy and anxious. Did she not like me?
I replayed the events in my mind, trying to figure out if I had made any mistakes. Perhaps I hadn’t made a good enough impression.
At that moment, I felt a pair of warm hands circle around my waist. I turned and saw Herbert, his posture respectful but his expression devoid of any warmth. He introduced me calmly, “Dad, Mom, this is my wife, Bella.”
Immediately, I bowed slightly and said, “Dad, Mom, nice to meet you.”
Connor placed a gift on the coffee table at that moment, adding, “This is a gift that Miss Bella prepared for you both.”
Winter’s gaze never left me. I couldn’t bring myself to meet her eyes, so I quickly lowered my gaze.
Herbert’s father gave a gentle laugh and said, “Hello, Bella. Please, sit down and rest for a moment.”
“Thank you, Dad.” As soon as I spoke, Herbert gently took my wrist and guided me to sit on the other sofa. The maid brought us coffee and juice. Everything in front of me felt overwhelming.
Such high-ranking officials and wealthy families are very different from my family.
I looked at the ornaments around me. They were all expensive antiques, and I was stepping on a very high-quality carpet.
A growing sense of restraint
At this point, Herbert’s father got up to answer the phone, and then, as he got dressed, said to Winter, “Someone from the White House came to see me about a job. I have to go and see him. Take good care of Bella.”
“Do you think I would dare not take care of the woman your son brought back?”
That was the first thing Winter said after I walked through the door. Not only did it embarrass me, but it also embarrassed the father and son. Mr Wharton laughed.
“You’re still acting like a child. You and your son have had a little conflict, could it be that you’re going to involve Bella?”
I could tell Winter wasn’t happy with me. Mr Wharton was hiding it for his wife.
I put my head down and pretended I didn’t know, but Herbert held my hand.
It was this simple act that warmed my heart. I said to myself in my heart.
In fact, I didn’t need to feel inferior at all, nor did I need to worry too much about his parents’ attitude towards me.
I didn’t marry Herbert for their power. I just wanted to give the child in my womb an identity. Now I’ve achieved my goal, I don’t care about anything else for the moment.
Thinking about it, I felt much calmer.
“Bella, from now on this place will be your home. There’s no need to be reserved. I have work to do today, so I’ll have to leave now.”
Derian Wharton approached me with a smile.
I stood up and nodded.
“Thank you, Dad.”
