Chapter 858:
“Is there a problem?” Herbert asked, noticing my hesitation.
“No… no problem at all. I’ll definitely go to the photo studio, print it in a large size, and put it in a big frame for you,” I replied with a smile.
“Don’t overdo it. Just a normal-sized one will do,” Herbert clarified, handing me the marriage certificate he was holding.
I took it, curious.
Herbert spoke very seriously, “Go back and put it in the safe. Don’t lose it!”
I reached out and took it, carefully placing it in my bag.
“I won’t lose something this important. I learned my lesson last time. If I lose the marriage certificate, I won’t even be allowed to get a divorce.”
Hearing this, Herbert frowned and pulled me closer to him.
“What did you just say?”
“I… I didn’t say anything. I just said we should keep our marriage certificate safe,” I stammered, clutching my bag tightly, not daring to say anything more.
Herbert stared at me for a moment, then grabbed the bag from my arms and tossed it aside. He held my shoulders, pulling me closer, and lowered his head to kiss me firmly.
“Mmm…”
I had only been joking, but he kissed me so intensely that it felt like my lips might bruise.
To make matters worse, Connor was still in the car, driving us. I felt both embarrassed and annoyed, but I couldn’t push Herbert away. His strength was overwhelming, as if he wanted to consume me entirely.
The kiss seemed to last forever. By the time he finally let go, I felt like I had been holding my breath for an eternity.
As I gasped for air, I immediately felt alive again.
I looked up and saw Herbert staring at me. Before I could say anything, he whispered in a hoarse voice, “This is your punishment. If you dare to talk nonsense again, I won’t be so gentle.”
Was that a threat? What else could he possibly do? Of course, that’s what I thought to myself. In reality, I didn’t say a word. After all, there was nothing I could do about this overbearing man, Herbert.
I knew the reason he was so agitated was because I had accidentally mentioned divorce. Or did it indirectly mean that he didn’t want to divorce me?
I was in a good mood, so I didn’t make things difficult for him.
Connor’s POV:
At that moment, I was sitting in the driver’s seat.
Although my eyes were focused on the road ahead, I was fully aware of what was happening in the back.
Once a man falls in love, he becomes like a woman—emotional and, at times, with his IQ seemingly dropping to zero. Sometimes, he’d even throw tantrums like a child, just as Mr. Wharton was doing now.
Seeing him finally reconcile with Miss Stepanek was truly wonderful. Having always been by Mr. Wharton’s side, I knew very well how deeply he loved Miss Stepanek. Watching their sweet marriage, I couldn’t help but feel a little envious.
