I made my words sharp, aiming to strike right at Emma’s heart. She had desperately loved William, but in the end, he avoided her like a mouse avoiding a cat. Now, with William having a new girlfriend, Emma was practically losing her mind!
She was so furious that she jumped up. I had never seen her like this. In my memory, she wasn’t someone who would feel ashamed. But now, she was genuinely upset, and for some reason, I felt a wave of satisfaction.
Emma roared, “Bella, we’ll see who gets the last laugh!”
She stormed off angrily, and for a moment, I almost felt guilty. But I couldn’t bring myself to feel happy seeing her leave.
At that moment, Joey walked over to me, shaking her head.
“You’re the only one who can handle her. This crazy woman goes mad every time she sees you, as if you owe her a ton of money!”
“It would be nice if I only owed her a debt. But now that we’ve become enemies, this grudge probably won’t end until we die.”
With that, I turned and walked into my office.
Sitting at my desk, I looked at the card Connor had given me earlier. My eyes lingered on the familiar words written on it.
I considered sending him a thank you text, but then thought better of it. It felt unnecessary, and I didn’t want to pretend with him. Since he’d found someone more suited to him, I’d find the right time to step away. I didn’t want to use the children as leverage; that was the last thing I’d ever do.
Right now, my focus had to be on running my business successfully. Only then could I secure a better future for my children. So, I tossed the card into the corner of my drawer, determined not to let it distract me.
I had just lowered my head to work when the office phone rang.
“Hello, this is the accounting firm.”
I picked up the phone and said in a soft, pleasant voice, “Bella, congratulations on your opening.”
A familiar female voice came from the other end of the line.
“You are…”
For a moment, I didn’t recognize who it was.
“You’ve only been away for a while, and you don’t recognize my voice anymore?” the woman on the other end said with a smile.
Then it clicked—it was Linda. I quickly smiled and said, “Linda, I’m sorry. I’ve been so busy recently that I didn’t realize it was you.”
At that moment, Linda stopped smiling and said, “It’s normal to encounter a lot of challenges when starting a business. Anyway, I’ll keep this short and won’t take too much of your time. I have two cases here. Since the other parties are relatively small clients, and our company is very busy right now, we can’t take on these cases. I’ll introduce these two clients to you instead.”
Hearing this, I was thrilled.
