“Is Herbert eating inside?” I asked, noticing the surprise on his face.
Connor paused for a moment, still stunned by my unexpected appearance. He then put down his newspaper and walked toward me, visibly bewildered.
“Miss… Miss Stepanek, what are you doing here?” he asked, his voice a bit shaky.
“Oh, I came to New York to take care of something. I just called Herbert, and he told me he’s having dinner here, so I came to see him,” I explained, smiling as I looked toward the luxurious revolving restaurant.
“Mr. Wharton called you?” Connor asked, a look of disbelief in his eyes.
As I observed his reaction, I noticed something felt off. Connor’s demeanor seemed unusual. He quickly stepped in front of me, blocking my path. Reaching out, he tried to pull me toward the elevator.
“Miss Stepanek, Mr. Wharton… this dinner is very important. It would be best if you didn’t disturb him. How about this, I’ll send you to the hotel first? After Mr. Wharton finishes, I’ll have him come find you. What do you think?”
Connor’s voice was hurried, and his eyes darted toward the entrance. He gestured with his hands, looking extremely nervous.
A deep sense of doubt started to rise in me. Connor, who was usually calm and knew his boundaries, had never acted this way. He had never touched me, but now he was pulling my arm. This wasn’t like him at all.
His expression was flustered, and his hands were waving anxiously. He kept glancing at the revolving restaurant entrance, making me more suspicious.
This was too strange.
I stared at Connor and asked, my tone serious, “Connor, why are you so nervous today?”
“I‘m nervous? I… I am not.”
Connor spread out his hands, looking as if he was pretending to be relaxed.
I looked in the direction of the entrance and asked, “Connor, tell me the truth. Who did Herbert ask to have dinner with today?”
I had a feeling I already knew the answer. At this moment, the person dining with Herbert was definitely not an ordinary friend. Connor was doing everything he could to push me away.
“This…” For a moment, Connor was at a loss for words. It was clear he was hiding something serious that he didn’t want me to know.
Without waiting for him to respond, I took a step forward.
When Connor saw this, he immediately stretched out his hand, trying to stop me.
I pushed his hand aside and walked past him, heading toward the entrance.
As soon as I entered the restaurant, I was struck by the sight before me—a world that resembled a transparent crystal palace. Glass and bright lights were everywhere. The outside world, dark and distant, seemed so far from this place, as if I had stepped into a palace floating in the night sky.
Soft music filled the air as dozens of tables were set by the windows. Some tables were occupied by two people, others by three or four. Most of the diners were couples, whispering to each other. Despite the number of people, the atmosphere felt peaceful, almost like a quiet palace.
The setting took me by surprise.
