Chapter 767:
Now I understood—my mother was thinking about Betty. But if she remarried Ryan just to help Betty’s marriage, she’d only suffer in the future.
“Mom, Betty’s marriage may already be beyond saving. Please, don’t get involved. If you remarry Ryan, you’ll never have a good life.”
I took her hand and spoke sincerely.
My mother sighed again.
“How could I not know that? But can’t Betty and Hank get back together?”
Although I hated to worry my mom with the truth, I couldn’t let her fall into another mistake. I had to be honest with her.
I turned and walked back into the kitchen. While I was cleaning the ingredients, I said, “Look at Betty’s current state. Do you really think Hank would like someone who has no ambition and only knows how to stir up trouble?”
My mother nodded.
“Betty has changed. She’s not the Betty she used to be. These days, she just shops, goes to beauty salons, and works out at the gym. If not, she’s off having a gathering with a bunch of friends. Anne’s been sent to an international kindergarten by her grandparents. I’ve advised Betty to go out and find a job. After all, she’s graduated from…”
“She can’t abandon herself at such a young age, but she refuses to listen to me and continues living like this,” my mother continued, her worry evident in her voice.

I frowned. While I was concerned, I knew there was nothing I could do now. My mother kept talking, “Hank found a job at a training school in the past few months. It’s said that his salary is quite high, since he’s a university professor. Now, he gives Betty a set amount of money to spend every month. But Betty always spends it all.”
“Does she think she can get rid of her resentment toward Hank by spending his money like this?” I asked, shaking my head.
“Ah, Hank should be there for Betty after work. But Betty says he doesn’t come home every day, and when she calls, he claims he’s working overtime. Sometimes, she doesn’t see him for days. When will her miserable days end?” My mother sighed, continuing to knead the dough.
Seeing her troubled expression, I could only try to comfort her.
“Mom, it’s Betty’s choice. Since she was willing to let go of her pride and her life to keep this marriage, she should have known that she and Hank are both tied to it now.”
“I sometimes think it would be better for her to divorce Hank. She’s still young, she could start over,” my mother said, her frown deepening.
I forced a smile and replied, “If she wants to start over, she needs to become financially independent first. She’s not mentally independent right now, so how could she start over? Mom, she has to rely on herself for this.”
“That’s true,” my mother nodded helplessly. Then, she shifted the conversation toward me.
“By the way, you and Herbert have been living together for a while now. When will you get married again?”
“Oh, he’s busy for now. We’ll see how it goes later,” I replied, avoiding the question.
