Chapter 659:
During this time, Jeremy had been well-behaved. Not only had he not caused me any trouble, but he was also working very hard. Even Selina had been friendly, cooperating with me without making things difficult.
Everything seemed to be going perfectly.
That morning, I was sitting at my desk when Selina hurried into the office, looking anxious.
“Bella, bad news. Jeremy developed acute appendicitis last night and had to undergo surgery. He’ll be off for a week, and I don’t think he’ll be able to return to work for that time.”
Selina said, walking toward my desk.
Upon hearing this, I frowned and replied, “But we’re supposed to submit the QT Company case on Monday. I’m not sure I can finish everything on my own in just three days.”
Selina lowered her head, thinking for a moment before saying, “Can you work over the weekend? I’m leaving for a business trip tomorrow morning, and the rest of the team is busy with their own tasks. I can’t find anyone else to help you. And besides, no one else is familiar with this case, so it would take one or two days just to get up to speed. Even if someone were available to help, it wouldn’t be very helpful. Why don’t you just push through and work harder?”
Selina’s tone was more of a negotiation, and after hearing her out, I nodded.
“I’ll do my best.”
“I know you can do it. Thank you for your hard work,” she said, nodding in satisfaction before returning to her office.
It was the weekend, and I had contacted Gary to look after Lucas and Lucky while I worked nonstop. I knew I had to finish the case these next few days.
At midnight, I was still sitting at my desk, working under the light of my desk lamp.
“Bella, you don’t have to sacrifice your rest for your work,” Joey said, noticing how tired I looked.
“I have to finish this case by Monday,” I replied without looking up.
Seeing this, Joey frowned and said, “It’s a pity that I’m leaving for a business trip early tomorrow morning. Otherwise, I’d help you.”
“Don’t be silly. You don’t know much about this case. Go to sleep quickly.”
I patted the back of Joey’s hand.
Joey turned around, touching her head, but then suddenly stopped and turned back to me.
“Do you think Jeremy is deliberately trying to set you up?”
“What do you mean?”
I raised my head, intrigued by her words.
“I think it’s too strange that Jeremy is sick at this time. How could it happen so coincidentally?” Joey stepped forward, her expression thoughtful.
I lowered my head and considered it. There was something off about the timing, but I didn’t voice my concerns. I had accepted this job, and now Selina had to go on a business trip early tomorrow morning. Regardless of the situation, I had to finish the case.
“It’s useless to think too much about it now. Jeremy has already taken sick leave,” I said.
