Chapter 596:
It was clear—I would be out of here once the project was inevitably rejected next Monday.
“Is there any other problem?” Selina asked impatiently.
I stared at her in silence.
“You can leave now.”
She lowered her head, turning her attention back to her computer.
“I’m fine with the budget, but I have a personal matter to discuss,” I said.
Selina seemed prepared for this. She lifted her head, a sneer playing on her lips.
“Do you want to clear up whatever happened between you and Jeremy? That’s your private business. I don’t care who you’re involved with. But I’ll warn you—don’t drag me into any trouble at the company. You’ve switched jobs plenty of times. You should know the rules by now. I don’t need to spell it out for you, do I?”
Her smug, condescending smile made my blood boil. She was just like Emma—only smarter. She hid behind an innocent facade while scheming behind the scenes.
I smirked.
“Jessica. Selina. You certainly have your tricks. I’ve learned a few things from you. But you’re nothing more than a little clever. People like you never truly succeed.”
With that, I grabbed the documents and turned toward the door.
I had no intention of arguing with her—it wouldn’t do me any good. I wouldn’t stoop to her level. The last thing I wanted was to give the people outside something to gossip about.
I heard her yelling behind me.
“You don’t have to warn me. At least I’m your boss now. I’m living better than you are!”
Hearing this, I frowned and immediately turned to face Selina.
“You should add a time limit. For now, you’re temporarily my boss, and for now, you’re just living a little better than me.”
“You…”
Before Selina could argue, I opened the door and walked out. As the head of Group Six, she wasn’t likely to chase after me and start another argument.
After work, I held a thick stack of materials in my arms while riding the bus.
Sitting there, I felt conflicted.
“Do I want to admit defeat and be eliminated, or do I make one last effort?”
I looked down at the budget in my arms. Even if I revised it again, the other party would likely remain unsatisfied. Their goal wasn’t to get a proper business plan—they wanted something else entirely.
Thinking about Selina’s haughty attitude, Jeremy’s harassment, and the disdain of my colleagues, I decided to amend it once more.
But this time, I couldn’t just work on the budget. I needed to find the root of the problem. It seemed I had to figure out a way to resolve it.
With that thought in mind, I quickly called Joey. I wanted her to help me find out more about the new boss of that company. Maybe she could find a solution for me.
