Chapter 572:
“Thank you,” I replied, keeping my voice steady.
Herbert didn’t say anything more, and I heard the sound of the door closing. I quickly turned around. As expected, he had left. The moment I was alone, I covered my mouth and couldn’t stop the tears from flowing.
I couldn’t control my emotions, but I wouldn’t forgive him. Every time he came near me, my body would tremble uncontrollably. All of this was because of the hurt he had caused me in the past.
All I wanted now was a quiet life. I didn’t want to get involved in emotions again. So, even though my heart was aching, I told myself that as long as Herbert didn’t continue to pester me, I could live in peace.
I couldn’t afford to be defeated or stay sad. I had to work hard to make my current life better.
One of the best ways to stave off sadness was to keep myself busy so I wouldn’t have time to dwell on the problems I was facing. Maybe everything would improve in time.
I grabbed a rag and started cleaning. It took me about four hours to get everything done. I was exhausted, but I still had to prepare dinner. After all, Lucky would be back in the evening. I took a short rest before heading into the kitchen to cook.
Just as dinner was ready, there was a knock on the door.
Gary had sent Lucky back. I took her into my arms and kissed her. Lucky hadn’t seen me for a few days, and she was just as affectionate with me. Her chubby little hands touched my face, and I missed her so much. I sat her on my lap and asked with a smile, “Lucky, do you miss me?”
“Yes,” she replied.
At that moment, Lucky could only say one word, but it made my heart swell with joy.
“Mommy made you egg fried rice. Mommy will feed you, okay?” I smiled at her. She put her finger into her mouth and stared at the egg fried rice on the table, drooling.
“It seems like you’re really hungry. Mommy will feed you,” I said as I scooped a spoonful of rice and gently placed it in her little mouth.
Lucky was delighted to finish all the dinner I had made for her. It wasn’t until after her shower, when I had coaxed her to sleep, that I finally lay down on my pillow, feeling utterly exhausted. When I didn’t have anything else to do, my mind drifted back to the painful look in Herbert’s eyes. But it didn’t take long for me to fall asleep—my exhaustion overtook me.
The next morning, Herbert kept his word and sent a car to pick up Lucky early. Once she left, I immediately began typing up my personal resume and prepared to start looking for a job. After sending out a few resumes, I bought some fruit and snacks before heading straight to my mother’s house. It had been a few months since I’d been there, and I missed her dearly.
I hoped Mom wouldn’t still be angry about the wedding.
Ding… dong… ding… The doorbell rang twice, and someone came to open the door. As the door swung open, I smiled, holding my bags, and called out, “Mom…”
To my surprise, the person who opened the door wasn’t my mother but another familiar face. Ryan.
