Chapter 562:
“How dare he?” I said, looking toward Herbert.
Lucas, now feeling more confident, stood taller.
“I have a mother to protect me!”
Herbert didn’t respond; he just raised his hand in a warning gesture toward Lucas. As the evening wore on, I noticed the time and said to Herbert, “It’s getting late. It’s better for Lucas to spend the weekend here. You can go back first.”
Herbert hesitated for a moment, standing up from the sofa. I could tell he didn’t want to leave. He kept looking at Lucky, Lucas, and me.
But I didn’t want him to stay.
He finally said to Lucas, “Listen to Mommy. Don’t be naughty.”
“Yes!”
Lucas immediately stood up and gave a salute.
Herbert’s lips curved into a small smile, and then he turned to leave.
My gaze couldn’t help but fall on the two of them. Although they shared a warm bond and seemed to have a good relationship, I still couldn’t shake my discontent. It was impossible for Herbert and me to be together, but for the sake of our two children, I was willing to maintain a peaceful connection with him.
As Herbert walked to the door, he suddenly paused and glanced back at the cramped space. He frowned slightly and asked, “Bella, should I find a bigger house for you?”

I knew this place was small. The large sofa bed took up nearly half of the living room, and in front of the tea table and TV cabinet were packed express packages. The balcony was cluttered with goods, stacked like small mountains. Lucky’s baby stroller, diapers, and toys were piled up in the corner. With me and Lucas in the living room, there was no space left for anything else. Although it was small, it was mine.
I didn’t want to accept anything from him, so I refused.
“No need. Thank you for your kindness.”
He had offered such a thing more than once, and each time, I had turned him down. In the future, I would rely on myself. I didn’t want to depend on any man, especially Herbert. I didn’t want any further connection with him.
I thought he would leave immediately, but unexpectedly, Herbert spoke up again, his voice louder this time.
“Bella, you’re an adult. You can endure some hardships, but what about the children? How can Lucas and Lucky grow up happily in such an environment?”
Bella’s POV:
I was still unwilling to accept any help from Herbert.
“Why are you so stubborn?” Herbert asked, a bit annoyed.
“From the first day you met me, you should have known my character. Is there any point in continuing this conversation?” I replied.
Herbert fell silent, but I could sense his frustration. Lucas immediately stood up and said to Herbert, “Daddy, you shouldn’t force Mommy to accept your idea.”
