This time, it wasn’t a customer. It was Herbert.
Only then did I realize that I hadn’t seen Lucas for two weeks. Ever since I moved here, Lucas had visited a few times, but with the house being so cramped and Lucas being his usual mischievous self, it often made things chaotic. I didn’t want to disturb Joey, so I tried to limit Lucas’s visits. But I missed him terribly. I had decided to work hard for the next two years, save up, and buy a small house. Then Lucas could come visit me as often as he liked.
While Lucky continued crying, I answered the phone.
“Hello?”
“Why is Lucky crying?” It was Herbert’s voice, sounding concerned.
He seemed anxious, which made me feel a little guilty. I replied, “She didn’t want to sleep, and I shouted at her.”
I wasn’t sure why I said it out loud. Perhaps it was because of the frustration I had just been feeling, or maybe I just needed to express myself. But I found myself wanting to talk to Herbert.

“She’s just a child. Why did you yell at her?” Herbert complained.
Hearing this, I couldn’t help but reply, “Do you know how tiring it is to take care of a child? Why don’t you take care of her then?”

“Lucas misses you and Lucky, so I sent him here. I miss Lucky too. Can I come up and see her now?” Herbert asked.
This was the rule I had set for Herbert over the past few months—he could only visit Lucky with my permission. In order to avoid upsetting me, he had always followed the rule. But right now, I was feeling so anxious.
Over the past few months, Herbert had shown me a great deal of respect, which is why I agreed to let him come up and see Lucky.
“All right, come on up,” I said, frowning.
Soon after, the doorbell rang.
Bella’s POV:
I placed Lucky, still crying, down on the sofa and went to open the door. Herbert glanced at me briefly before turning around and rushing over to Lucky. He picked her up from the sofa bed and said, “Good girl, don’t cry. I’ll take you out to play, okay?”
Herbert cradled her in his arms, walking back and forth in the narrow living room. Watching him, I couldn’t help but be surprised by his soft side. He seemed to have infinite patience for Lucky.
“Dad, Dad…” Lucky mumbled, looking up at Herbert with a slight pout. Over the past two months, Herbert had been visiting her almost every week, bringing her plenty of food and toys. Despite being only one year old, Lucky could already tell who was good to her, and she had started calling him “Dad.”
Compared to Klein, Lucky seemed to like Herbert more, even though Klein had spoiled her just as much. It was strange how bloodlines seemed to create such a bond, pulling two people together so quickly.
At that moment, a small hand tugged at my clothes. I looked down and saw Lucas, his little face looking up at me with innocence.
