Chapter 52:
“A review letter? He read the one Joey wrote for me? Since it’s fine, there’s no need to rewrite it?” For a moment, I felt a surge of happiness. I had successfully submitted it this time.
As I looked at Herbert again, I noticed Emma approaching him with a towel. She began to wipe him down, but Herbert immediately rejected her, pushing her away.
After that, Connor and Allie each stepped forward, taking his suit and draping a bath towel over him. The group walked toward the VIP section.
I couldn’t help but feel a little pleased that Emma had been rejected.
At this time, Emma approached.
“I’ve never seen such a shameless woman like you. You’re pregnant, and yet you’re still trying to seduce another man!” Emma said, her voice dripping with mockery.
I held back my anger and forced a smile.
“You’re not pregnant. Why can’t you seduce him successfully?”
“You…” Emma was furious.
I immediately warned her, “This place is full of people. Are you sure you want to fight with me here?”
“Let’s wait and see!” Emma left angrily. After she was gone, Joey walked over. She glanced at Emma’s retreating figure and said, “That woman is like a mad dog!”
I wrapped my arm around Joey’s and smiled.
“Don’t let her affect your mood. The juice over there is really good. Let’s have another drink.”
“Alright,” Joey smiled and nodded. As we walked, she whispered, “I can see that the boss is really kind to you. His face changed when you fell down just now!”
“He just worries about the baby in my belly. Do you really think he cares about me?” I replied.
Although I said that, I couldn’t help but feel a little warmth inside.
“The way the boss was holding you… it was so handsome. It was like he was protecting a princess, just like a knight from the Middle Ages!” Joey clapped her hands together, and I could see the envy in her eyes.
I didn’t know whether I was lucky or unlucky to have met Herbert. In fact, when he was by my side, I really felt safe. Just like earlier, when he held me, I felt like a well-protected princess. For so many years, I had always been the one protecting my mother and sister. Even when I was in a relationship with my ex-boyfriend, I took more care of him than he did of me. I had never experienced what it felt like to be cared for and protected.
But what was the real relationship between Herbert and me?
“Maybe I’m just a tool for him to have a child,” I thought, feeling a little uncomfortable.
As the dinner party was drawing to a close, Allie, Herbert’s secretary, suddenly appeared in front of me.
“Miss Stepanek, I’m a little timid, and the guest room in the VIP area is quite big. Would you mind accompanying me tonight?” Allie asked gently.
I glanced at Joey. If I left, she would be alone. Joey gestured that she was fine, so I agreed to Allie’s request.
“Shall I go with you to get the suitcase now?” Allie smiled.
“Okay,” I nodded.
