Chapter 518:
Herbert looked devastated. As I stared at the man in front of me, weighed down by guilt and self-blame, I felt a flicker of emotion, but I still couldn’t accept his explanation.
Glancing at the medical records in front of me, I placed a trembling hand on my cheek. Then, suddenly, I raised my head and asked, “When I was in Qingshan Mountain, did you visit me repeatedly just to ensure I had a baby, so you could use the baby’s blood to save Lucas?”
Judging by the timeline, Lucas’s condition must have been critical at that time. I couldn’t forget how much he had hurt me. Back then, I wanted nothing more than to disappear. I thought he was tormenting me out of obsession, relentlessly pursuing me again and again. But now, I realized the truth.
“Bella, I’m sorry. I truly had no other choice at the time. I know I caused you irreparable pain, and I will do whatever it takes to make it up to you and Lucky. Please… forgive me, if not for my sake, then for Lucas and Lucky.”
Herbert took a step forward, trying to close the distance between us.
Seeing him approach, I quickly stood up, pointed at him, and warned, “Don’t come any closer!”
Herbert stopped in his tracks, his eyes filled with sorrow. His voice trembled as he said, “Bella, I really didn’t have a choice back then!”
“It’s all because of you. You can’t erase the damage you’ve done to me. Why should I forgive you? If you hadn’t hidden Lucas from me, or if you had handled things properly with Caroline, Lucas wouldn’t have suffered like this.
“It’s all your fault!”
I shouted at him.
Then, I turned around and walked away.
“You can blame me all you want, but don’t tell me you won’t even acknowledge Lucas?”
Herbert’s desperate voice rang behind me. I froze, staring at the ceiling in silence. But no matter how hard I tried to suppress it, tears welled up in my eyes and spilled down my cheeks.
What should I do?
Maybe Lucas really was my son. He had endured so much at such a young age, and the thought of it crushed me.
“Ever since Lucas was old enough to understand, he kept asking why he didn’t have a mother. I could only tell him that his mother was taking care of his little sister and that she would come back to see him soon. Bella, whether you forgive me or not, please… reconcile with him. He needs a mother’s love.”
Herbert stepped closer, one slow step at a time.
At that moment, I couldn’t hold back my sobs any longer. My shoulders shook as I cried uncontrollably. Then, I felt a warm presence behind me. A gentle hand rested on my shoulder.
Bella’s POV:
“Herbert, don’t touch me!”
Even if he had a reason, I still couldn’t accept it. The pain he caused me was real. He couldn’t just say sorry and expect it to disappear.
