Chapter 478:
“Yesterday, I took her to the balcony to play. I didn’t expect her to catch a cold so easily, and she developed such a high fever. After we arrived at the hospital, the doctors and nurses kept asking us to wait, and we were struggling with appointments. Thankfully, Mr. Wharton was with us.”
Hearing this, I felt even more grateful to Klein. I turned to Jane and reassured her.
“You don’t have to blame yourself. It’s normal for children to catch a cold.”
“Thank you for understanding,” Jane replied.
Klein then spoke to Jane, his voice calm.
“Jane, it’s getting late. Go grab something to eat from the cafeteria and bring me something too.”
“Okay.” Jane nodded and left the ward. After she left, I sat down beside the bed, gently holding Lucky’s chubby little hand in mine. My eyes were red, but my voice was steady as I said, “Klein, you really saved Lucky and me today. If anything happened to her, I don’t know what I would do.”
Klein gave a light laugh, trying to make the situation seem less dire.
“You’re making it sound worse than it is. There’s no need to worry so much. It’s nothing too serious.”
He paused, then added, “And besides, I’m Lucky’s godfather. It’s my duty to take care of her.”
His words touched me deeply, and a sense of gratitude overwhelmed me. I realized that I had probably become a burden to him, yet when I needed help the most, I could only turn to him. There was no one else I could trust like I trusted him. I lowered my gaze, silently contemplating, before speaking again.
“Klein, I’m sorry about what happened last time.”
“What happened last time?” Klein asked, his expression soft and inquisitive.
“Last time, when I paid you back, it really wasn’t what you thought. I wasn’t overthinking it—I just don’t like owing people money for too long. That’s all it was, nothing more.”
I looked into Klein’s eyes as I explained myself.
He remained silent for a moment before saying, “I spoke too harshly back then.”
As he spoke, he turned toward the window, taking a deep breath. Even though he tried to sound casual, I could tell he still cared about it.
My actions had clearly hurt his feelings and his pride.
Regret settled over me. Paying him back had been the right thing to do, but maybe my timing had been wrong.
After a pause, Klein said, “When I go back, I’ll bring Lucky some milk and diapers. I’ll also grab some daily necessities for you. You’ll probably have to stay here for a few more days.”
“Thank you.”
I nodded. Klein turned and left the room. After closing the door behind him, he took a deep breath before walking away.
Not long after, Jane returned with food. I had been busy all day and was starving. Now that Lucky was stable, I finally felt some relief and began eating.
