Chapter 440:
“Betty, you’re back?” I greeted her first. I didn’t think we were close now, but I still considered her my blood-related sister. Despite the misunderstandings we had before, it was time for us to try and ease our relationship.
However, Betty looked at me with clear disdain. She was obviously aware of my situation and knew I was living with Mother. She didn’t seem surprised at all when she saw me holding the baby, so Mom must have told her about me.
Betty walked up to me, glanced at the baby in my arms, and sneered.
“Sister, you haven’t been back for more than half a year, and the first thing you do when you come back is bring a child. Did you deliberately want to make Mom angry?”
Hearing such unfriendly words, I frowned.
“Betty, when did you become so mean?”
Betty sneered again.
“I’m mean? Why don’t you see how ridiculous your actions are? You were pregnant before you got married and even gave birth to a child. Do you know what the neighbors are saying about you and Mom? It’s one thing for you to be shameless, but don’t drag Mom into it.”
Betty’s words struck me like a hammer. I felt a heavy discomfort. Was this the sister I had always cared for?
“I’m not the only one who got pregnant before marriage. I wasn’t the only one who chose to raise a child as a single mother. You just met Hank, who was willing to take responsibility, so don’t think you’re more noble than me. You don’t have the right to judge me!” I retorted.
But as I said this, my heart ached deeply, because the person in front of me was someone I had always protected since she was a child. No matter what, I always thought of her, but today, she only sneered at me.
I had exposed Betty’s insecurities, and it only made her angrier.
“Are you saying that Hank married me out of pity?” she asked, her voice trembling with emotion.
“I didn’t mean that,” I said quickly, trying to calm the situation.
“That’s exactly what you meant. You think you’re some sort of savior, don’t you? Without you, I’d be like you, holding a child alone, looking pathetic,” Betty spat out.
“Are you suggesting that if you hadn’t asked Hank to marry you, he wouldn’t have taken responsibility for you? Should I be thankful for that?” I shot back.
“Or, are you jealous of me? You don’t want to see me living better than you, do you?” Betty’s words became more venomous, like a knife stabbing into my heart. At this point, her voice was raised so high it startled me.
“Wa…”
Lucky burst into tears.
I immediately stood up from the sofa, anger rising inside me.
“I don’t want to argue with you!” I exclaimed.
Turning away, I tried to go back to my room.
However, Betty stepped forward and blocked the door.
