Chapter 408:
Klein’s eyes were sharp, and his words just now stirred something in me. It was touching to have a man like him protecting me. But fate had a cruel sense of humor—I couldn’t control my heart. I saw Klein as a dear friend, but never as the man I loved.
“What is it?” Klein asked nervously.
“Oh, nothing. Look at you, you’re sweating a lot. Go take a shower,” I said with a small smile.
“Alright.”
Klein chuckled, then pulled off his damp T-shirt and casually tossed it onto the sofa before heading into the bathroom.
I sat back down and watched TV for a while when suddenly, the doorbell rang.
Ring… Ring…
Setting the remote control aside, I stood up to answer the door.
Jane must have come over to cook. She usually had a key, so she must have forgotten it today.
I reached for the doorknob and pulled it open.
The moment I saw who was standing outside, I froze.
Bella’s POV:
I never expected it to be Herbert.
Instinctively, I moved to shut the door, but before I could, he pushed it open and stepped inside.
“Herbert, what do you want?”
Fear coursed through me. I couldn’t believe he had actually come here.
His eyes swept across the room before he spoke coldly.
“So you’re hiding in Klein’s house. A single woman living under the same roof as a single man—do you think that’s appropriate?”
His accusation ignited a spark of anger in me, but I kept my expression neutral.
I knew there was no way I could force him to leave, so instead, I turned around, sat down on the sofa, and responded in a contemptuous tone, “If anything, it makes perfect sense. We’re both single, after all. That’s much better than some men who already have a fiancée yet still seek out another woman elsewhere.”
“You…”
Herbert’s jaw clenched, his eyes darkening with rage.
“You’re not welcome here. Leave immediately!”
My tone was firm, and I refused to even look at him.
“You’re not the one who gets to throw me out. Are you the hostess here?”
His voice dripped with sarcasm.
His defiance only fueled my anger.
“If I wanted to be, I could be. Believe it or not!”
The moment I laid eyes on Herbert, all my strength and composure crumbled.
