Chapter 393:
I couldn’t drink because I was pregnant, and I knew it wouldn’t be good for the baby, so I quickly came up with an excuse.
“I have an upset stomach, so I can’t drink with you.”
Joey pouted a little, clearly disappointed.
“I’ll drink it myself, then. I can only comfort my melancholy with alcohol tonight.”
“What’s there to worry about?” I asked, genuinely curious.
Joey sighed, pulling me out of the door as she spoke.
“I’m worried that I can’t find a good man and become a rich woman. I want to have a sweet relationship…”
I smiled bitterly as I listened. Joey’s words reminded me of how some people were heartbroken by love, while others were troubled because they hadn’t found it yet. I had experienced too much. Love was like a sharp sword—it could hurt you deeply.
If I could turn back time, I thought, I would rather stay single and never encounter love at all.
That night, Joey was really drunk. I knew that her life had been difficult over the years. She had been supporting her mother on her own, still renting a house and sending her mother for treatments.
Joey was under immense pressure, especially after losing her job because of me. I had thought about it all night, and by morning, I had made my decision. I was going to return to Wharton. After all, I was familiar with the environment there, and it would be easy to find another place to live. I planned to get two part-time accounting jobs. Earning enough to cover my expenses wouldn’t be too difficult.
Given how noticeable my pregnancy symptoms were, I knew I had to take care of myself. I learned from my past mistakes. As I packed my suitcase the next morning, Joey was still asleep, drunk from the night before. I didn’t want to wake her, so I left 500 dollars and a note on her pillow before quietly heading out.
I made my way to the train station. With three hours until my train, I settled in the waiting hall. As I sat there, waiting idly, my phone rang.
“Bella, it’s Amy,” a familiar voice said once I answered.
“Hello, Amy. Why are you calling me all of a sudden?”
“I know you’re back in town. Since it’s the weekend, I thought I’d treat you to lunch,” Amy replied with a smile in her voice.
“I’m sorry, Amy, but I’ve already bought a train ticket to Wharton for 12 o’clock. Let’s grab lunch together next time when we’re free,” I explained.
“You’re leaving again?” she asked, surprised.
“Yes,” I responded.
Amy was quiet for a moment before saying, “Well, there are still three hours before your train. There’s a Liang’an Coffee Bar near the station. I’m going there now. How about we have a cup of coffee together?”
I glanced at my watch—it was nine o’clock. I hadn’t seen Amy in a long time, and I did miss her. So, I agreed.
“Okay, I’ll wait for you,” I said.
“Great! I’ll see you at Liang’an Coffee Bar in half an hour,” Amy said before hanging up.
Bella’s POV:
