Chapter 334:
I wiped the tears from her cheeks with my fingers and smiled.
“Silly girl, I’m your sister. Of course I’ll help you. But it’s your fault. Now that this is the result, there’s no need to dwell on it. You should live a good life and be happy in the future.”
“Yes.”
Betty nodded, her eyes still full of tears.
“Let’s go. Mom’s still waiting for us.”
We walked home hand in hand. The next morning, Hank came to pick Betty up, and they officially met with our mother.
I stayed in my room and didn’t come out because I always felt that Hank looked at me with complicated eyes. I didn’t want to face him.
Two hours later, Betty and Hank returned, happily holding their marriage certificate. Betty was no longer the broken version of herself; she seemed completely different. I was happy for her and hoped she would have a good start in this new chapter of her life.
In the afternoon, Betty began packing her things into luggage. Our mother, with tears in her eyes, said, “I never expected you’d be getting married.”
“Mom, I don’t want to leave you either.”
Betty hugged our mother tightly. I felt a bit emotional as well, but I stepped forward to reassure her.
“Mom, Betty’s marriage is a happy thing. Don’t cry!”
Upon hearing this, our mother quickly wiped her tears, then wiped away Betty’s tears. She said solemnly, “Betty, you need to be a good wife and a good mother in the future.”
“Mom, I know. Hank’s waiting for me. I’m leaving now!”
Betty picked up her suitcase and left. Because she was pregnant, she couldn’t carry heavy things, so I quickly went to help her. Hank opened the trunk and placed the luggage in the car. Hank looked at me as if he wanted to say something, but he just opened his mouth and didn’t say anything.
I glanced at Betty and said to Hank, “Hank, take good care of my sister, or I won’t let you off the hook!”
“I know,” Hank nodded.
Betty happily linked her arm with Hank’s and said shyly, “Sister, don’t worry.”
“You can leave now.”
I waved at them. After watching them get in the car and drive away, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Hank seemed distant and cold toward Betty. But, in truth, it was probably because of how everything had happened. Over time, he would likely come to realize just how adorable Betty really was.
When I returned home, I found my mother standing by the window, looking out.
“Mom, stop staring out the window. They’re gone,” I said with a smile.
Mother slowly retracted the disappointment in her eyes and said, “Betty didn’t show any signs of giving up.”
“She won’t, Mom.” I reassured her softly.
Then, Mother turned to me and said, “By the way, you…”
“Mom, I’m in a hurry to find a job. Let’s talk about it next time.”
