“He left an hour ago? But I haven’t seen him.”
It was only a fifteen-minute drive from Wharton Group to the marriage registration office.
There was no reason for him to take this long.
Something wasn’t right.Herbert had left the company an hour ago, yet he still hadn’t arrived at the marriage registration office.
Worry gnawed at me.
What if something had happened to him on the way?
Anxiously, I turned and walked out of the office, my heart pounding in my chest.
I traced the route from the marriage registration office to Wharton Group, searching for any signs of an accident. But I saw nothing—no wrecked cars, no emergency response teams.
A small wave of relief washed over me. At least it meant Herbert hadn’t been in an accident.
Maybe he had been delayed by something urgent.
I checked the time. It was almost noon.
I had been walking for nearly an hour in high heels, and the ache in my feet was becoming unbearable. Spotting a row of chairs nearby, I sat down to rest, rubbing my sore ankles.
Where was Herbert?
Why couldn’t I reach him?
What could possibly be more important than our marriage?
I had dialed his number countless times, yet every call went unanswered.
Just as frustration and worry threatened to overwhelm me, my phone suddenly rang.
My heart leaped.
I answered immediately, my voice filled with urgency.
“Herbert, where are you—”
Before I could finish, Joey’s frantic voice interrupted me.
“Bella! What are you doing? Why haven’t you been answering your phone?”
“I’ve been calling Herbert. I can’t reach him,” I replied, my anxiety mounting.
Joey’s voice sharpened.
“What’s going on between you two?”
“What do you mean?” I frowned, feeling a deep sense of unease.
“I remember you saying you were getting married to Herbert today.”
“Yeah… what’s wrong?”
Something about her tone made my stomach twist.
“Herbert is holding a press conference right now,” Joey said, her words slow and deliberate.
“He’s announcing that he’s going to marry Caroline.”
I froze.
The air left my lungs.
