Chapter 298:
“I have no choice. If you turn off your phone, I can only put on my clothes and come to you,” he said, his tone serious. Was he really going to come to me? My heart suddenly tensed.
Bella’s POV:
“Don’t come! It’s not time yet!” I shouted into the phone.
“I just want to have a goodnight kiss. If you don’t give it to me, I’ll come to your house to ask for it.” Herbert sounded like a willful child.
I immediately replied, “Okay, I compromise. I’ll send you a goodnight kiss through the phone.”
Herbert’s laughter suddenly filled the line.
Hearing his laughter, I felt like I had been tricked.
“Are you just joking?” I asked.
After a brief silence, he replied seriously, “No, I really will do that.”
Quickly, I kissed the phone with all my heart. After the kiss, there was silence. I could hear his heartbeat and his breathing through the phone. In that moment, I missed Herbert even more. I really wanted to hug him and kiss him.
“Bella!” Herbert called my name.
“Hmm?” I replied.
“I love you!” Herbert’s pleasant voice came again.
I was stunned. This was definitely the first time he had said those words to me.
Those words felt like a sacred ritual in my heart. They meant that the feelings Herbert had for me were real.

Although he had shown his love through his actions and words before, hearing him say “I love you” directly meant more than I could express.
I had waited so long to hear that from him. I thought he’d say it on some special occasion, but I didn’t expect it to come during such a normal time, through an ordinary phone call. It was completely unexpected, and happiness suddenly enveloped me. I was so overwhelmed that I forgot to respond.
“Are you still there?” Herbert asked.
“I’m here.”
I nodded.
“Did you hear what I just said?” Herbert asked.
“Yes.”
I nodded again.
Damn it, I was so excited that I didn’t know how to respond to him. Maybe I should reply with “I love you”? I took a deep breath and was about to say it when he spoke again, “Rest early, good night!”
“Good night,” I replied.
Then he hung up the phone. I leaned back on the pillow, staring at my phone screen.
“The call ended so quickly. I didn’t have time to respond!”
Frustrated, I covered my head with the blanket.
The next morning, I was focused on updating my resume when Amy called me.
“Amy, is something wrong?” I asked, feeling a bit worried.
