Chapter 29:
I couldn’t believe my ears. Was I hearing things? Or was he out of his mind? No, this didn’t make sense. Shouldn’t he give me a check or a bank card to solve this on my own?
“Get married?” I echoed, disbelief creeping into my voice.
“Get married for a child?” I repeated, still trying to grasp what he was saying.
“Don’t joke with me like that. I might take it seriously,” I added, feeling confused.
I thought he must be joking. Even if he wasn’t, it couldn’t be a serious suggestion. So many women would want to marry a man like Herbert. If he wanted to marry me just because I was pregnant, then how many times would he have to get married?
“I’m very serious now!” Herbert said, his tone unwavering.
His serious gaze made my heart race. When our eyes met, my heart began to pound uncontrollably. His expression didn’t suggest any hint of a joke. It was the first time he had ever spoken to me like this.
“Is he serious?” I thought, my mind completely in chaos. He was going to marry me? I had thought about many possible outcomes, but this wasn’t one of them. I didn’t know how to respond to him, so I fell silent.
Herbert broke the silence.
“Don’t you want our child?”
“Who said I don’t want this child?” I quickly retorted.
“I will give birth to him!”
Herbert’s voice softened.
“That’s great.”
“But…” I hesitated, looking at him. I wanted this child because it was my child. I loved this child already.
But I hadn’t decided whether I wanted to marry him.
Herbert had the family background, wealth, intelligence, and looks that all women desired. And I was just an ordinary woman. Marrying a man like him felt overwhelming.
“But what? Do you want our child to be an illegitimate child?” Herbert asked, his voice sharp.
“Of course I don’t want to,” I replied instinctively. This child, even though just a fetus, already meant everything to me. I knew I would do anything for him.
“Let’s go and get the marriage certificate now.”
Herbert took my hand and led me toward the car. Get a marriage certificate?
Everything was happening so suddenly. Was I really going to marry Herbert and become his wife?
Bella’s POV:
Herbert’s hands were warm, and I felt instantly surrounded by a sense of security. Although I didn’t know much about this man, I believed that he would definitely protect me and my baby.
He’s so outstanding and handsome. Our baby will surely inherit his genes. At least, the baby I give birth to will be exceptional. When I considered the future of my child, it seemed like the right decision to marry Herbert.
But when it came to marriage… I hadn’t really thought it through.
As the car smoothly drove down the road, I stared blankly at Herbert and asked, “Are we really going to the marriage register and register for marriage?”
