Chapter 242:
When I began to speak, I saw him looking at me with a smile on his face. I said angrily, “Are you really stupid, or are you playing dumb?”
“That woman’s words were too unpleasant! Bella, as long as we do our best, that’s all that matters. Don’t tell me you think what she said is true?”
Klein said seriously.
I rose to my feet and said, “You’re a lawyer. I can’t convince you. But in the future, it’s best for us to keep our distance. Mr. Wharton, please understand me!”
After that, I turned and walked out.
“How far is the distance you’re talking about?” Klein called after me.
When I walked to the door, the person behind me suddenly asked something. I stopped in my tracks. After hesitating for a moment, I turned to look at Klein. In a serious voice, I said, “The distance an ordinary boss and an ordinary employee should have.”
Without waiting for Klein to respond, I turned and walked out of his office.
As I stepped out of Klein’s office, I walked down the corridor and overheard people discussing my relationship with him. I couldn’t stop the rumors, but in the future, I would have to keep my distance from him. I hoped that, with time, the rumors would eventually fade away.
The next day, I left my office with a cup and decided to head to the pantry to make a cup of coffee. As I reached the door, I overheard someone talking inside.
“Does the boss really have an ambiguous relationship with the manager?”
Selina laughed and replied, “How would I know if they’re having an affair? I didn’t see the two of them make love!”
The words were followed by a burst of laughter from the pantry. I estimated there were at least four or five people inside. Once the laughter died down, Selina continued, “But didn’t you guys notice? The way the boss looks at Bella is different. There’s a warmth in his gaze, an intense heat. It’s the kind of heat caused by chemical reactions!”
“I also feel like the boss treats Bella differently,” another voice added.
“Yesterday, when that crazy woman came to cause trouble, the boss was really agitated. You’ve all been here long enough—who’s ever seen the boss so angry? And he even hit her!”
Selina added, “No!”
The others quickly denied it.
“So, the boss must love Bella!” Selina laughed.
“No way! The boss is a playboy, but he keeps his work and personal life separate. He’s never flirted with women at the office.”
“Maybe he just hasn’t met the right woman,” Selina suggested.
“I heard the boss has a girlfriend. What’s going to happen now?” someone else asked.
“I don’t know. We’ll just have to see who’s better—the boss’ girlfriend or Bella!”
“Yesterday, that woman said that Bella’s ex was the president of the Wharton Group. The president of the Wharton Group and our boss are cousins. Two brothers and a woman…”
“Who cares if they are brothers? Besides, they’re cousins. Some biological fathers and sons even sleep with the same woman,” Selina said with a smile.
“I didn’t expect Bella to look so serious, but in reality, she’s so flirtatious. All the men who are obsessed with her are bosses!”
