Chapter 216:
Whenever she challenged me, I found it impossible to soften my words. And Bella—she would never back down so easily. If I called now, she would probably just curse at me again.
I didn’t want to argue with her anymore. I didn’t want to hurt her again.
So even though I had the urge to hear her voice, I put my phone down.
Still, I was in a surprisingly good mood today.
Even with only two hours of sleep, I felt energized.
Perhaps I was afraid that if I didn’t keep myself busy, I wouldn’t be able to resist the urge to go see Bella.
And that was why I had invited Klein for drinks tonight.
Because I knew that if I saw her again, and she pushed me too far…
I wouldn’t be able to control myself.
I didn’t want to force her to sleep with me again because I couldn’t control myself…
Bella’s POV:
I started working as soon as I arrived at the office. Despite still feeling uncomfortable, I didn’t want my condition to affect my work progress.
About an hour later, I called Selina into my office.
“Manager, is there anything you need me to do?” she asked, walking in with her arms crossed and a somewhat arrogant expression on her face.
It had always been this way with her. I had heard that she was able to join the company due to her close connections with a high-level executive. I didn’t know which executive she relied on, but I knew that no matter who it was, they were people I couldn’t afford to offend. As long as Selina didn’t cross the line and completed her tasks, even if I didn’t like her much, I wouldn’t create trouble for her.
“Have you finished your work from last month?” I asked, looking up.
“Not yet,” she replied in a flat tone, which caused me to frown.
“I told you yesterday that I’m going to report today. The report needs to be done as soon as possible!” I insisted.
Selina didn’t seem guilty at all and retorted loudly, “Manager, you didn’t come to work this morning. I thought the report wasn’t important anymore.”
Her meaning was clear: she was trying to shift the blame onto me. She implied that it was because of my absence that she hadn’t finished her work. And by highlighting my absence, she was subtly accusing me. I knew if I pushed further, Selina would turn the situation around and say I hadn’t taken leave and that I was absent from work. In the past, she often came looking for trouble, but since my own work was fine, she couldn’t find any legitimate issues with me. But today, she was pushing my buttons. I suppressed my anger and said, “Please go and finish the report right now and hand it to me before you leave. Is there a problem?”
“No problem,” she responded before turning and walking out.
After Selina left, I angrily slammed the document on my desk. The past two days hadn’t gone well. I was in pain from head to toe after being thrown around by Herbert last night.
When it came to work, my subordinate was procrastinating and shirking her responsibilities! My mood had become very bad. Five minutes later, I called my assistant, Amy, into the office. Amy knocked lightly on the door, then walked over to me and said, “Manager, don’t let Selina’s attitude get to you. She’s very arrogant in front of everyone.”
