Chapter 181:
“Ah…”
I instinctively reached out and grabbed the collar of his shirt. In my panic, I felt even more flustered. His unique scent filled the air, and the warmth of his hand on my waist enveloped me. I was immediately surrounded by his presence, and for a moment, I felt completely disoriented.
The air conditioning in the office was low, but I could feel my skin growing hot. I was wearing a thin linen professional skirt, and he was only dressed in a light shirt. When my body brushed against his, it felt like a collision of warmth, as if hydrogen and oxygen had combined to create an overwhelming heat. My skin flushed from the inside out, and I could hear myself breathing heavily.
In a frantic rush, I pushed away from him, lowering my head as I tried to tidy up my clothes. My face felt hot, and I didn’t know what to do. At that moment, Herbert reached out his hand. I felt a rush of confusion and anxiety. What did he want to do?
Before I could take a step back, his fingers brushed over the name tag on my chest.
“Financial manager?”
Herbert read aloud, his voice deep and smooth. I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed. I had misunderstood him, thinking he might have had other intentions. Fortunately, he hadn’t done anything inappropriate. If he had, the situation would have been even more awkward.
He must have been married to Caroline by now, right? I had been abandoned by him once before. Why did I still allow myself to believe he could have any interest in me?
Thinking of this, my heart sank to the depths, and the burning love I once felt instantly turned cold.
I couldn’t deny that I still had feelings for him, but they were no longer the same as they had been half a year ago. Now, I understood with absolute clarity that there was no future for us.
After a brief moment of panic, reason took control, pushing aside the emotions that had once ruled me.
“Yes, Mr. Wharton,” I replied politely.
“Have you been doing well recently?”
There was a hint of sarcasm in Herbert’s tone.
I looked up and replied calmly, “Yes, not bad.”
“Are you together with that Hank?”
I hadn’t expected him to ask such a question. His words struck a nerve, igniting the defiant side of me. Lifting my chin slightly, I met his gaze and answered, “Yes, we are very happy together. The first person I see when I wake up in the morning is him, and the last person I see before I go to bed at night is also him. Our relationship is like an eternal flower that will never wither.”
Before I could finish my sentence, one hand wrapped tightly around my waist while the other restrained my hands behind my back. Then, without warning, I was forced into a kiss.
“Mmph…”
I wanted to curse, but no words could escape.
I struggled with all my strength, but he only held me tighter.
Desperately, I kicked his leg with my high heels, but he showed no sign of letting go.
His tongue pressed forward, invading the space of my mouth with increasing intensity…
