Chapter 179:
“Is he still here often?” I asked Betty.
Betty replied, “He’s been here twice since you moved out. Every time, he comes to ask Mom if there’s any chance you and Herbert could get back together. Then, he leaves in a few minutes. Mom’s the only one who thinks Ryan is still thinking about us!”
I knew Ryan wouldn’t come back today. He usually came here to hide it from Connie, but today was the reunion day for the whole family, so he couldn’t come anyway.
Then, Mom sat at the dining table with a depressed look and said, “Let’s start!”
Betty immediately picked up her chopsticks and started eating. I was upset when I saw my mother’s unhappy expression. But after everything I’d been through, I could probably understand her better. If a woman loved a man deeply, it wasn’t easy to completely erase him from her life.
“Mom, you eat too!” I said, cutting the steak for her.
“Okay,” she replied, though she still seemed to be in a bad mood.
At that moment, Betty suddenly said, “Mom, why can’t you see Ryan’s true colors? He sees you as useful, so he flatters you. But if you were no longer useful to him, he’d just ignore you!”
“Betty!” I quickly intervened, worried that Mom wouldn’t take it well. However, this time, Mom raised her head and said, “Now I understand. I won’t let him control me anymore. You two can be witnesses!”
She then lowered her head and continued eating the steak. Betty and I exchanged glances, feeling relieved. It would be great if Mom could finally move on from that failed marriage.
On Christmas night, I stayed at Mom’s house. Betty and I were still in the same room, and she apologized to me.
“Sister, I’m sorry for what happened last time!”
I saw the guilty look on Betty’s face and smiled.
“It’s all over. We’re still sisters.”
“Then why don’t you move back?” Betty asked.
“I want to find a place near the company, so I don’t waste time traveling back and forth,” I replied.
“That’s true.” Betty nodded.
“By the way, you and him…” I hesitated. I was actually concerned about Betty and Hank, but I didn’t want to bring it up and risk causing tension between us again.
But Betty, generous as always, said, “He’s very serious with me now. He doesn’t even joke around anymore and has been keeping his distance. So now, all I can do is study hard.”
Hearing this, I felt a sense of relief. I thought to myself, “Hank is really a good person. If he didn’t like someone, he wouldn’t give them false hope.”
Mom and I had suffered a lot because we fell in love with someone who didn’t love us. If Betty could avoid this, she would be very lucky.
“But my feelings for him won’t change. He doesn’t want to fall in love with a student as a teacher. I can pursue him after graduation. He is my ultimate goal!” Betty said, raising her hand as if to cheer herself on.
Hearing this, I frowned. I thought Betty would let go of this unrequited love, but it turned out that she had fallen deeply for Hank…
Bella’s POV:
Time flew by, and half a year had passed. The weather was growing warmer.
