Chapter 177:
When I saw him, I was stunned. Klein laughed, revealing his white teeth.
“Are you surprised to see me?”
I could never have imagined that the young man sitting next to the female examiner would be the big boss and chief lawyer of this legal department. Klein was the main interviewer, and I hadn’t expected it. I felt a little embarrassed, especially after my straightforward performance yesterday.
“I thought the boss and chief lawyer of the QW Law Firm should be an older man,” I said, trying to laugh it off.
Hearing this, Klein chuckled. Staring at me, he said, “You weren’t as frank as you were yesterday.”
My cheeks flushed slightly. I wanted to say something, but he continued, “Do you know why I chose you as my financial manager?”
I shook my head. This was the question I had been thinking about all night. I had performed well on the professional questions, but I didn’t think I stood out from the other candidates. Was it because Klein found my directness interesting?
After a moment, Klein’s expression became serious as he said, “Because you are honest enough. I need a financial manager who is upfront with me. I usually have to handle cases and manage this law firm, which keeps me very busy. Finance is crucial, but I don’t want to play guessing games with my financial manager. I hope you will continue to be as candid as you were yesterday. Can you do that?”
His words ignited my enthusiasm for the job. This boss was different, and it aligned with what I wanted. I wanted to work honestly and directly with my boss, without being caught up in unnecessary complexities. I was only responsible for my work.
“Yes!” I answered clearly.
Klein smiled, then stood up and extended his hand toward me.
Seeing his extended hand, I didn’t hesitate and reached out to shake it. This was a new job, and a new beginning.
Bella’s POV:
Klein took great care of me. He personally led me to the office he had prepared for me.
The finance manager’s independent office was wonderful. Although it wasn’t large, it offered a view of a corner of J City. There were two pots of green plants on the desk, adding a touch of freshness and uniqueness.
In the following days, I worked diligently. Everything went smoothly, except for one of my assistants who didn’t follow my instructions. Otherwise, everything was perfect. There were only three people in the finance department, including myself. Amy, who was recruited at the same time as me, and another older employee named Selina, who didn’t follow my orders.
Later, I learned that Selina had been eyeing the position of finance manager. However, she didn’t expect the company to hire a new person instead of promoting her. Feeling resentful, she began to cause trouble for me. But, since I was no longer a fresh graduate, I knew how to handle such situations. I was new to the company and didn’t want to make too many enemies. My priority was the company’s welfare.
After a month, Klein gave me a bonus and encouraged me to continue working hard. I had a good chance of becoming permanent staff. I was very satisfied with this job, both in terms of salary and the working environment, so I continued to work with determination. On Christmas Day, the company gave out gifts, and we had the whole day off. I went to the office to pick up some documents, and just as I was about to leave, my phone rang. I looked down and saw my mother’s number.
My emotions were mixed. I had been away from home for almost a month, and my mother hadn’t contacted me once. I had called her twice, but she didn’t want to talk much. Today was Christmas, and even Joey had gone back to her hometown to celebrate the holidays. I, feeling like I had no place to belong, began to feel lonely, so I eagerly picked up the phone.
The moment the call connected, my mother’s voice came through.
