Chapter 236:
She glared at him, her fury evident, and he pinned his gaze on her, watching her reaction closely.
“You and your Uncle’s evil deeds will soon reach the ears of the King if you keep threatening me.”
Rosa’s heart skipped a beat. She glared at him, making sure he was the one spouting such nonsense.
That damn peasant!
Her eyes flashed red at the thought of her Uncle’s words.
“Ray isn’t a threat.”
She’d visit him the next morning to deal with Ray. He was already becoming a problem, and she couldn’t afford to let her efforts be ruined a second time.
How could Silas be blind to Ray’s actions, despite how clever he was?
She stepped closer to him, keeping her hateful gaze fixed on him.
She wouldn’t let him see her nervousness. He wasn’t capable of intimidating her.
She knew that he could destroy her, but she refused to let him see even the slightest hint of fear.
“I am not afraid of you,” she said firmly. “If you think you can bring me down, I’m sorry… because in your wildest dreams, you can’t. I am powerful. I am the King’s mistress, and he wouldn’t believe a commoner over his mistress.”
“Meanwhile, there is no evidence,” she added, folding her arms beneath her chest, giving him a defiant look.

“Of course, there is,” Ray retorted. “How do you explain the bags of coins I was paid with? There’s no way a pauper like me would have such coins without doing a dirty deal for them.”
Rosa’s mind raced as she let out a small laugh. “I could say you stole them. Since you’re poor and work in the palace, you could have overheard where the King or his mistress keeps their money and snuck into the room to steal it.”
“Stupid. You of all people know there are guards on duty, monitoring the place day and night.”
“You bribed the greedy ones, like yourself, and they snitched. You stole them.”
“So explain why I haven’t fled, considering how cruel the King can be?” she challenged.
“You actually have a plan to escape, but you don’t want it to be… obvious.”
“Too soon, since you don’t want to draw the guards you tipped.” Rosa let out a burst of wicked laughter before locking her confident gaze on him.
“Trust me, I’m smarter than you, and I’m always steps ahead of you and everyone who poses a threat to me.”
Ray’s eyes darted around as he racked his brain for something to say that could defeat her. He struggled not to reveal his defeat, but his eyes betrayed him.
“I could expose the truth. I’ll tell him that you made me do it—”
“I didn’t make you do anything. Driven by greed, you agreed, and I paid you for your service. You’re an adult, and your choices aren’t forced on you. You weren’t coerced, and you are responsible for whatever decisions you make.”
“Meanwhile, if you don’t want to lose your life, keep your mouth shut. Do not tell the King. You ungrateful bastard…” she flared, pushing him in anger. “I distracted the King, replacing someone with you to keep you alive. By doing that, he won’t know that you’re not dead and that he killed the wrong person. He doesn’t know you still exist, and that’s because I promised you protection. Unless you want to die a second time,” she said with pure hatred. “And this time, you will die a real death.”
