“I won,” Rosa repeated, staring absentmindedly at the glass of wine before her. Her reflection danced on its surface, but despite how exciting it should have been, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
Her heart suddenly began to pound, fear consuming her and washing away the celebratory mood.
“What if she comes back miraculously?” Rosa broke the silence, her face hardening.
“Who?” Silas asked.
“That bitch. Aurora.”

“But they didn’t see a dead body,” she argued, letting out a deep sigh of worry as she cupped her hand to her forehead.
She was sure Aurora’s return would be bitter. It screamed war. She would come for revenge. Her return was unimaginable. It would be better if she were truly dead, as Silas had claimed.
“Listen,” Silas said after she had caught her breath. “No one can survive a night in the woods. That cursed place is filled with wild animals, rogue hunters, and worse. You see, these hunters hate rogues passionately. Imagine what they would do if they came across one.”
“She’ll be dead,” Rosa answered, a small ray of hope flickering within her soul. She hoped so.
“Let’s forget about the hunters. She can’t survive the cold. She was barely dressed the day she was sent away. I made sure she couldn’t take anything with her. Besides, some animals are smarter than people. They can outsmart them and kill them.” He paused to catch his breath.

“So, you see, darling, the reason her body is nowhere to be found is because it was eaten by the animals. So cheer up. You are free from her… forever,” he whispered, stressing the last word.
“I understand, Uncle,” she said, lowering her head in submission.
“Now, drink up. Forget about that dead girl,” he said, gulping down the contents of his glass.
Soon, the bottles lined up on the table were empty, but that didn’t stop Silas from clearing them away and replacing the empty bottles with more.
“How is the bastard, Ray?” Silas asked, a tone of disgust in his voice.
The sound of his name on Silas’ lips made her tighten her jaw.
“He’s doing good,” Rosa replied, but the smile on her face vanished as she seemed displeased. “He’s alive. He was almost caught the day we set him up with Aurora, but with the guards’ help, after Damon ordered him to be locked in the dungeon, I switched him with another guy since Damon had only met him for the first time.”
“He was blinded by rage, so he won’t recognize him that quickly.”
“I must confess, that was brilliant,” Silas said, a smile curving his upper lip as he patted her shoulder before moving closer. “Now that’s what I’m talking about. You have to be a smart thinker. Always stay steps ahead of everyone. With that, nothing will catch you off guard because you’ll always be in control of the situation. Nothing will go wrong.”
Rosa’s heart nearly melted at his words, but the thought of Ray quickly erased her excitement. She wished he was out of the picture. Lately, after Aurora’s absence, Ray had become demanding and authoritative. She hated him.
“Bastard,” she muttered unexpectedly, gripping her cup tighter as anger overtook her.
