Chapter 208:
“Why didn’t you answer when we called? You scared us. We thought something happened to you,” he said. From his expression, I could tell he wasn’t pleased with my silence.
I sighed, trying to come up with an excuse. “I was… sleeping.”
His brows furrowed as he stepped closer. “I’ve known you for almost a month, and you don’t sleep at this time,” he said in a gruff tone.
Despite the harshness in his voice, it sent goosebumps down my spine.
I shifted uncomfortably under his piercing gaze, unable to think clearly. “Well, I decided to sleep,” I said, forcing a nervous smile.
The silence between us stretched on as we waited for Dax. My heart hammered against my chest, and sweat began to bead on my forehead from the tension.
“And where were you taking that food?” he asked, eyeing the plate with suspicion. My breath caught in my throat, but I quickly regained my composure.
The last thing I wanted was for him to see through my lie.
Devin was a human lie detector.
“To the dining room,” I muttered, giving him another nervous smile, trying to meet his eyes.
“You think I’m stupid?” He smirked, closing the distance between us. “Your body betrays your words. You’re still embarrassed about what happened in the bathroom, aren’t you?”
I froze in shock, my mind racing, but quickly regained my composure. “Of course not. It’s already in the… past—”
“One thing you should always remember is that I can sniff out the truth.” He placed his large hand on my face, cupping my cheek and stroking it with his thumb. “And it’s obvious you’re lying.”

Dang it!
“You’re tense. Relax and take a deep breath.”
I almost melted at his touch. His fingers were rough, but they felt so good against my skin. My heart raced as I closed my eyes, leaning into his palm.
No, Aurora, you’re not supposed to be doing this!
My subconscious scolded me for giving in so easily. Reluctantly, I pulled my face away from his hand, looking away from him.
“There you are,” Dax’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts, making me jump in shock.
I quickly pulled away from Devin, putting some space between us.
“Come on, let’s eat!” Dax ordered, leaving no room for protests. There was something about Devin that made me feel like a little girl. He was like a tough boss, and I was the naive employee. It made me feel small, and for some reason, I found it oddly attractive.
Dax was the first to walk to the table, while Devin walked beside me. Having them so close made me nervous. It took a great deal of effort to keep from tripping and falling over my own feet.
I froze when Devin leaned closer to me.
“I think you’re very sexy,” he whispered in my ear, winking at me before joining Dax at the table.
Caught off guard, I gasped in shock. His words echoed in my head, leaving me momentarily stunned.
