Chapter 760:
One evening, Herbert came home in a hurry.
“Back already? Dinner will be ready soon,” I said with a smile as I played with the children in the living room.
Herbert put his briefcase down, walked over, and gently touched Lucas and Lucky’s heads. Then he said quickly, “I have something to do in New York. Can you help me pack some clothes?”
I couldn’t help but frown as I asked, “It’s getting late. It’s not safe for you to travel for hours in the dark. Why don’t you leave early tomorrow morning?”
“No, I’m in a rush,” Herbert insisted.
“Why the rush? Did something happen?” I studied his face, sensing that something serious was going on, but he denied it.
“It’s nothing serious. My mother came back from her vacation in Canada. She’s not feeling well, and we haven’t seen each other in a while. I’m going to check on her.”
I nodded and didn’t press the issue. I went upstairs to pack his things. I packed some new clothes and daily necessities into the suitcase and zipped it up. As I did, I couldn’t help but think.
Logically, when McKenna returned from Canada, if Herbert truly wanted to visit her, he should have brought me and the children along. After all, it had been a long time since McKenna had seen Lucas, and she had never even met Lucky. I was their mother, and Herbert’s future wife. According to proper etiquette, he should have arranged for us to meet McKenna. But he hadn’t. The only reason for that would be if McKenna still couldn’t accept me and didn’t like the children I had given birth to.
I didn’t care what she thought. She didn’t like me, and I didn’t like her either.
With that thought, I went back downstairs with the suitcase.
Herbert set Lucky down and reached out to take the suitcase from me.
“When will you be back?” I asked.
Herbert thought for a moment, then said, “Perhaps it will take a week.”
“That long?” I asked, feeling a little reluctant to be apart from him.
Seeing my reaction, Herbert reached out and gently patted my cheek. In a soft voice, he added, “Connor will stay behind to help me manage my daily affairs. You can call him if you need anything.”
“You’re not bringing Connor with you?” I asked, surprised. Normally, wherever Herbert went, Connor was always by his side. So why wasn’t he bringing him along this time?
“Because I’ll be gone for a while, and there are too many things in the company that need attention. So, Connor won’t be coming with me this time. Alright, I’m leaving now. Take good care of the children and yourself!” Herbert finished, glancing at me and the kids before turning around and leaving with his suitcase.
A week passed in the blink of an eye. During that time, Herbert sent only a few brief messages and made one quick phone call.
I started to feel a little worried. I called him, but when I heard voices and laughter in the background, I realized he was probably at a party. Herbert only spoke a few words before hastily hanging up. His tone was a little impatient.
Since then, I didn’t call him again. I was afraid of disturbing him, but I also felt a little hurt.
