Chapter 711:
I had already considered it. I needed to visit my mother tonight, and I hadn’t figured out how to face Herbert. I replied, “Gary, I’m not worried with you taking care of Lucky. I have something to do tonight, so I won’t come over.”
After that, I hung up the phone.
When work ended, I made my way to my mother’s house.
I’d been so caught up in work lately, or rather, troubled by it, and I hadn’t wanted my mom to worry about me, so I hadn’t gone back. Tonight, I could stay with her.
“Mom!”
I arrived at the door and happened to meet my mother.
A smile spread across her face.
“Bella, come in!”
As we walked inside, mom asked, “How have you been recently?”
“Mom, I got promoted,” I said bluntly. I didn’t want to talk about anything else, as I didn’t want her to worry. I walked into the kitchen and began preparing dinner with her.
My mother smiled happily.
“That’s really great news. We haven’t had such good news in a long time.”
“That’s great. But, I hope Betty’s life improves as well,” my mom added with a sigh.
I furrowed my brows, concerned.
“Mom, how is Betty?”
Bella’s POV:
“Ryan has moved to Hank’s house and is now living with Betty,” my mother said.
I was taken aback by the news. I looked at her, surprised, and asked, “How could Ryan be living in Betty and Hank’s house?”
“I had to drive him out. He had nowhere else to go, so he turned to Betty for help. She took him in. If I had known this would happen, I would’ve put up with it and let him stay here. Now, with him in the middle, Betty and Hank will have an even harder time,” my mother sighed, regret evident in her voice.
I understood what she meant. I knew Ryan’s behavior all too well. With his encouragement, Betty’s relationship with Hank would likely get worse. But now, there wasn’t much we could do.
“Mom, their lives are their own. If you’re really worried, you could visit Betty and Anne sometime,” I suggested.
“That’s all I can do,” she replied, still sounding upset.
After dinner, Mom and I sat together, chatting as we used to. It felt like the old days again.
It wasn’t until almost ten o’clock that I left, as my mother urged me to go. I was lucky enough to catch the last bus. As I got off and walked home, I felt surprisingly good.
The moon hung high in the sky, and the cool autumn night breeze brushed against my face. When I reached the apartment building, I was about to take my keys from my bag when suddenly, a large hand grabbed my arm from behind!
I was startled, and my legs felt weak. My first instinct was that a thief was after my money or worse.
