I was stunned by the sight of the female attendants. Each of them was carrying several bags—around fifty or sixty in total. It felt as if they had brought the entire shopping mall with them.
One by one, the attendants stepped forward, smiling as they presented their offerings.
“Miss Stepanek, I’m from the service department. Here are five dresses, three pairs of trousers, three shirts, and two suits. These are all the latest styles of the season and have been selected based on your size. Please try them on and see if you like them.”
“Miss Stepanek, I’m from the women’s shoe department. Here are five pairs of high heels, three pairs of casual shoes, and two pairs of sneakers—all in your size. Would you like to try them on to check the fit?”
“Miss Stepanek, I’m from the underwear department. Here are ten sets of underwear, all in your size. You can try them on to see if they fit.”
“Miss Stepanek, I’m from the bag department. Here are five satchels, three handbags, and two casual bags. These are all from international brands and top quality. Would you like to take a look?”
“Miss Stepanek, I’m from the cosmetics department. Here are five different sets of products. I can help you try them on to find the one that suits you best.”
“Miss Stepanek, I’m from the grocery department. Here are five sets of pajamas and many daily necessities. You can have a look and see if any of them are to your liking.”
At that point, the sheer number of attendants and their voices overwhelmed me. I felt a headache coming on.
Lucas, clearly excited, laughed loudly.
“Mommy, Daddy is so generous. It’s obvious that you’re his true love. He bought so many things for you! He’s so stingy with me though—every time we went to the mall, he only let me pick one toy!”
His little face scrunched up as he voiced his grievance, and I couldn’t help but smile at him. I glanced at Miranda, then turned to her and said, “Miranda, please ask them to leave. I’ll buy my own things.”
I didn’t like this. Why hadn’t Herbert asked for my permission before bringing the entire mall to our doorstep? What was he trying to prove? Was this just to flaunt his wealth?
I grabbed Lucas’s hand and started to walk away.
But the attendants continued to press.
“Miss Stepanek, these are all your husband’s kind intentions. Why not pick a few things that you like?”
“Yes, these are all classic styles,” they added.
As I held Lucas’s hand and carried his school bag with the other, I walked out of the villa.
“Mommy, Daddy gave you so many things. Why aren’t you happy?” Lucas asked, looking up at me with curiosity.
“It’s nothing. This is between your daddy and me,” I replied, trying to brush it off.
