After coaxing Lucky to sleep, Lucas pestered me to come to his bedroom and tell him a story.
However, I wasn’t sure what was going on with him today. I told him numerous stories, but he still refused to sleep.
In the end, I was exhausted.
Looking at the clock on the wall, I saw it was almost 11 o’clock. I helplessly looked at Lucas and asked, “Why don’t you sleep today, Lucas?”
My throat was dry. I really didn’t understand why his big round eyes were still so full of energy.
To my surprise, Lucas climbed into my lap and hugged my waist, saying, “Mommy, I might be too excited today. You’re here in my bedroom tonight to tell me stories. That’s great!”
Hearing this, I felt both happy and uncomfortable at the same time.
I gently stroked Lucas’s head, feeling a deep sense of guilt.
I had owed this child so much. When he needed me most, I wasn’t there to take care of him. The thought weighed heavily on me.
“Be a good boy, Lucas. Mommy will tell you stories before bed every night from now on, okay?” I looked into his eyes as I said this.
Lucas looked up at me in surprise and asked, “Is it for real?”
“Of course. Mommy won’t lie to you.” I nodded seriously, silently vowing to make it up to him.
“Mommy, I love you!” Lucas said, hugging me tightly.
At that moment, I stroked his head and said, “But now you have to go to bed immediately. You still need to go to kindergarten tomorrow, do you understand?”
“Got it.”
Lucas nodded heavily, then lay back on the pillow obediently and closed his eyes.
A few minutes later, Lucas’s breathing was steady. I looked down and saw that he had fallen asleep under the dim wall lamp.
Seeing him so calm and well-behaved, my eyes began to well up. This child loved to be close to me and always listened so attentively. He was so well-behaved.
I knew that Lucas truly needed a mother.
I gently covered him with a thin quilt and kissed his little face. Then I turned off the wall lamp and quietly walked out of his bedroom.
As I exited the bedroom and was about to close the door, a hand suddenly reached out and grabbed my hand, which was still on the handle. I was so startled that I let out a soft scream.
“Ah!”
“Don’t be afraid, it’s me!”
A familiar voice rang out.
I turned around and saw a handsome face illuminated by the dim light from the living room. Seeing that it was Herbert, I instinctively touched my chest.
“Are you trying to scare me to death?”
