Chapter 601:
“Mr. Wharton?”
Hearing Joey’s words, I turned around. As expected, Klein was standing right in front of me. My hand, which had been holding the glass of red wine, froze when I saw him! We hadn’t seen each other in months. He looked a bit thinner than before, but otherwise unchanged. We had once been so close, as if we were family. Although that bond hadn’t completely vanished, we were undeniably more distant now.
At that moment, Joey said, “Well, I’m a little hungry. I’m going to grab some cake. You two can talk.”
With that, she turned and walked away. I didn’t know how to face Klein. I wanted to call Joey back, but it was too late—she was already far away. Klein looked at me, his gaze gentle as he spoke, “Don’t worry. I’m just here to say hello. I won’t bother you.”
I stroked my long hair, my words coming out a little unsteady, “… didn’t think of that.”
“How have you been lately?” Klein asked.
“Good.”
I didn’t meet his gaze and simply nodded.
“And Lucky? How is she?” Klein asked again.
“Yes, she’s doing well. She’s grown taller, and she’s starting to talk now.”
I looked up and replied.
“That’s good,” he said.
Klein nodded. For a few seconds, we stood in silence, as if there was nothing left to say. Sensing the awkwardness, Klein smiled, but there was a trace of bitterness in it.
“I have a few friends over there. I’ll go over first,” he said.
“Mm.”
I nodded.
“Wait a minute!”
Suddenly, a thought crossed my mind, and I quickly stopped him.
Bella’s POV:
I walked up to Klein, standing just a little too close. In a low voice, I asked, “What’s the relationship between William and Daniel?”
I remembered that Klein and William were friends, so he would definitely know about William’s background. Klein replied, “Daniel is William’s father.”
My guess was right. Daniel and William were indeed father and son. The wealthy man Connie had found was William. She had become William’s stepmother, and Emma was now William’s legal younger sister. But Emma had once been William’s girlfriend. This situation was so complicated!
“You probably saw it, right?” Klein continued.
“Emma’s mother, Connie, is now married to William’s father. She’s now the wife of the chairman of K.G. Software Company.”
I sighed.
“This world is really small. I’m on the opposite side of them again.”
