Chapter 585:
Joey’s expression darkened a little. She pointed toward the sofa bed where Lucky was sleeping soundly.
“Her father!” she said.
I immediately understood who Joey was referring to and couldn’t help but curl my lips in response. I didn’t say anything. Joey continued, “Let me tell you, we both know the strength Herbert has in this field. He definitely has the connections and know-how to solve these problems.”
“I don’t want to have anything to do with him except for the two children,” I said firmly. Over the past few days, Herbert hadn’t appeared in front of me at all. Maybe it was because I had hurt his pride so much last time. Every time he arranged for someone to pick up Lucas and Lucky, he would send a car. Sometimes, he’d sit in the car without getting out. He never met me now.
I didn’t want to have any further contact with him, except for when it came to the children. I was content with the peaceful situation we had now. Besides, I didn’t want to rely on Herbert in the future; I knew I had to depend on myself.
Joey shook her head in disappointment.
“Alas, you’ve missed out on a rich, handsome guy. What a shame!” she teased.
“If you like him so much, why don’t you go be with Herbert? I’m not worried that you’d mistreat Lucas or Lucky,” I replied sarcastically.
I got up and went into the bathroom to brush my teeth. Joey followed me and leaned against the door frame, crossing her arms over her chest. She sighed and said, “Do you think I wouldn’t want to? A man like Herbert is not only rich, handsome, and charming, but he also has two children. All I’d need to do is be a beautiful woman. I wouldn’t even have to have kids. But would he like me?”
“If you’re done with your speech, please go throw out the trash in the kitchen. It’s starting to smell worse!” I muttered as I brushed my teeth.
“Hey, why do I have such a hard life? I haven’t found a man yet,” Joey said as she turned to leave.
She came back halfway and, in a serious tone, added, “Let me remind you, that scumbag will definitely cause trouble for you again. You have to be on your guard!”
After that, she turned and left.
I paused, stopping mid-brush, and thought about what Joey had said. After considering it for a moment, I found a large fruit knife and slipped it into my bag. If Jeremy continued to harass me, I’d be ready to defend myself.
Bella’s POV:
The next day, I went to Group Three to gather more information about the situation. The accountant responsible for K.G. Software Company’s budget in Group Three refused to divulge any details. Although he didn’t mention any specific issues with the case, his warning was clear: he advised me not to make trouble for myself. The colleagues in Group Three were all very friendly, a stark contrast to the atmosphere in my own group.
I couldn’t help but feel a little disheartened. It seemed that many of my colleagues in Group Six had issues with me. The only male employee, Jeremy, constantly harassed me, and the women kept their distance, discussing matters privately when they thought I wasn’t listening.
I didn’t understand it and felt like it was impossible to work effectively with such an uncooperative team. By the end of the day, I had made no progress on my work.
