Selina nodded in satisfaction before walking back to her office, her posture proud. I lowered my head and began flipping through the documents, the complex numbers and legal jargon making my head spin.
The dense documents really made my head spin. But I knew Selina’s point was valid. If I understood all these cases, I would be able to start working soon. So, over the next few days, I carefully read through the documents. After working for several hours one day, I decided to take a break and go to the lounge to buy a cup of coffee. Just as I was about to reach the door, I overheard a sneer from inside.
“Did Jessica do that on purpose? She gave her so many documents to read. I bet she feels awful every day, probably about to throw up! Ha!”
“Who said that? In our field, if she has work experience, she should be able to start right away. But Jessica made her read all the documents. It’ll probably take her a week to get through everything. What’s the point of that?”
“I think Jessica just doesn’t want her to start working so soon.”
“She’s on probation for a month. If she can’t start working within another month, she probably won’t be able to do the job properly. Maybe Jessica wants to drive her away.”
I immediately recognized the voices of two colleagues from Group Six. Did Selina really want to force me to leave? If she didn’t want me to become a permanent staff member, why had she allowed me to stay? Was she just trying to torture me during my probation?
No matter the reason, I had to prove myself and secure my position.
At that moment, I felt a hand suddenly rest on my shoulder from behind. Startled, I turned around and saw Jeremy standing there, his eyes filled with something unsettling. He was looking at me in a way that made me uncomfortable.
I instinctively took two steps back, distancing myself from him.
I despised Jeremy, which is why I always tried to avoid him. But he took a step forward, walking closer, and said in a low voice, “Bella, don’t listen to their nonsense. According to company regulations, as long as you complete one or two simple cases during your probation period, you’ll become permanent staff. Don’t worry. I’ll talk to Jessica in a couple of days. I’ll work on two cases with you and make sure you finish them successfully. What do you think?”
As he spoke, his hand moved toward my back. I felt his warmth against my skin, and his fingers brushed dangerously close to my bra strap. Was this man… sexually harassing me?
I immediately pushed him away and said firmly, “I don’t need your help. Stay away from me.”
Bella’s POV:
I turned and went to the bathroom. Sitting on the toilet, I felt a surge of frustration. There were disgusting male colleagues in the office, always gossiping about the female staff, and my superior was none other than my sworn enemy, Selina. Honestly, I should just resign and leave this place. But I felt like I was too weak. Had I been pushed out because I wasn’t good enough?
My pride wouldn’t let me give up now. I had to work harder. I needed to become a permanent employee this month. Even if I didn’t want to stay here later, I could resign on my own terms. I was the one who would decide whether to stay or leave. After thinking it through, I gathered the courage to face this situation. I stood up, pushed open the door, and walked out. This month was definitely not going to be easy.
Three days later, I finished reading all the documents, working extra hours to get through them. Then, I walked into Selina’s office.
