“Mommy, don’t get sick in the future. I’ll be scared if you’re ill.”
“All right, Mommy will never get sick again.” I nodded with a smile.
When I looked up, I noticed that Herbert was still standing there. After Lucas spoke to me for a while, Herbert stepped forward and gently touched Lucas’s head.
“Lucas, let your mommy rest now. I’ll take you back first.”
Hearing that, Lucas pouted and said, “No, I want to stay here with Mommy.”
“Mommy is sick. She needs to rest. Otherwise, Mommy won’t get better for a long time,” Herbert said, deliberately pulling a serious face.
Despite his reluctance, Lucas looked at me, lying on the bed, and said thoughtfully, “Mommy, I’ll go back first. I’ll come to see you tomorrow.”
“Well, you’re the best in the world.” I smiled and touched his chubby face.
At that moment, I lifted my head and met Herbert’s gaze.
“How is Lucky?”
I had been lying here all night and hadn’t known if Lucky was doing better. Herbert reassured me.
“Don’t worry, Gaynor is very experienced. Lucky is doing much better now.”
I nodded, feeling a little relieved.
“I’ll have to trouble Gaynor to take care of Lucky for the next few days.”

“Well, then I’ll take Lucas home first. I’ve hired a nurse for you. I’ll come back to check on you later,” Herbert said, nodding. He took Lucas’s hand and started to walk out.

I still wanted to say something.
Herbert turned around and looked at me.
Bella’s POV:
I thought for a moment and then said, “Please thank Gaynor for me. Lucky’s a stubborn child. It must be hard for her.”
I knew that Gaynor was someone I could trust. Despite the harm Herbert had caused me, he had always taken good care of Lucas. That was why I could rest assured that Lucky was in good hands for the time being.
“Okay.” Herbert nodded, then glanced at me before turning around and leaving with Lucas.
In the days that followed, Herbert would come to see me every morning with Lucas, bringing photos of Lucky each day. I could see that Lucky was doing well and behaving herself, so I was able to rest and recuperate in the hospital, with a nurse taking care of me.
I noticed that Herbert was deliberately keeping his distance from me. Every day, about half an hour after bringing Lucas to the hospital, he would use the excuse of needing to drop Lucas off at kindergarten and then go to work, leaving earlier than necessary.
I thought it was for the best. It would keep things from feeling awkward for either of us. This was probably the most comfortable way for us to interact—raising our two children together without any emotional connection.
This was the arrangement I wanted, but there were still moments, especially in the middle of the night, when I would feel a deep sadness.
